Although I agree with him I seriously doubt that he really meant what he tweeted (using the term as a generic verb). The EC is an anachronism and it never actually operated as the founders intended. What Hamilton intended when he proposed the Electoral College in Federalist No. 68 was a system under which the voters of each state would select a body of wise men (electors) who would then use their independent judgment to elect the president.

Something tells me that you would have second thoughts if a liberal Democrat who lost the popular vote was elected to the presidency through the EC.

I'm all for getting rid of the EC in favor of the popular vote. Let's go with a true "majority rules", and stop focusing presidential elections and campaign issues on what the "experts" think will poll best in the 4 or 5 swing states.

May I ask why? What makes you want to preserve the Electoral College? What is its net benefit to America?

Because it makes it more likely his candidates will win while effectively disenfranchising voters in places he doesn’t like.

I’m hoping for his answer. I’m willing to listen if there’s a reason that’s not… this.

Are you saying that there's not a chance that a liberal Democrat could win the EC while losing the popular vote or that there's not a chance that you would change your mind?

Without the electoral college then the densest population areas would determine the election

What's the case that unpopulated land should determine elections?

You mean the most people? :)

Edit : I live in Northern Virginia. I think that Highland County should have as many "electors" in state elections as Northern Virginia has. Otherwise, well.....the densest population areas would just decide every election.

Highland County is the least populated county in Virginia, with a population of 2,232 as of the 2020 census. It's located in the western part of the state and is known as "Virginia's Switzerland" or "Virginia's Little Switzerland".

Fairfax County is the most populated county in Virginia, with a population of 1,150,309 as of 2020. It's also the most populated jurisdiction in the Washington metropolitan area and the Washington–Baltimore combined statistical area.

Arlington County, or simply Arlington, is a county in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county is located in Northern Virginia on the southwestern bank of the Potomac River directly across from Washington, D.C., the national capital.
    Population: 234,162 (2023)

Land doesn’t vote. People do. What is your concern if the voice of the majority of Americans is heard over what’s become a sliver of a far smaller number of people in swing states?

Treating a vote as equal to another isn’t disenfranchisement; it’s literally fair. It also forces political candidates to visit and build coalitions with voters they normally couldn’t cater to.

The only logical reason why you’d post a “look at all this red” map is that you believe that it’s the best way to preserve Republican power. It’s anti-democratic, with a small “d.”

Let’s take your logic a step further. Do rural votes in California not matter, because the EC effectively nullifies them. What about urban votes in Texas? Same situation.

I’m afraid this isn’t a good argument for keeping the EC, unless your concern is maximizing the chance of a Republican POTUS.

That sounds like a compromise that a lot of people could get behind.
