Scheduling Out Of Conference Games In The New CFP Format

His logic is flawed. You should be scheduling tougher OOC games to offset your in conference losses.
Maybe it's time to pickup a 9th conference game. The other P4 conferences play 9.

The real problem is Boise St getting a bye. They should be treated like ND and only allowed a spot for being the top G of 5 team.

 

Agreed. Oklahoma kept Alabama out of the playoffs, not a non conference foe. It's just Alabama being Alabama. They want to take their ball and go home.

 

I disagree w/ the Bama coach for Bama but I agree for us.
With our crazy SEC schedule, which includes playing UGA every year, plus FSU, we don't need another tough game.
We need 3 relatively easy games.

As a thought experiment, think how different this year would have been if we opened w/ a cupcake instead of Miami?
Now we are 8-4 (assuming the year plays out the same) and perhaps in a better bowl.
CFB values losses far more than good wins, so let's play that game until we can show up and beat the Utahs and Miamis of the world without much drama.

 

Didnt they lose to Vandy and Oklahoma...win one of those games and you are in...Bama is NOT entitled to a playoff game!

 

When is the last time we finished a season with our starting QB? Injuries pile up in tough games.
Two D1 rivals that have been to college championships, a third rival UCF has been getting better, we play all three plus the SEC schedule, this is too much. We, plus LSU, Georgia, Alabama, have lost games this year due to many injuries. A fact of life in the best football conference in the country. FACT! Having played the game I shudder when guys are carried off due to season ending injuries.
These extremely tough schedules we are playing makes me think, Hey we are tough, but in the scheme of things the best thing we get is a small bowl. Getting to the CFB playoffs is almost impossible for SEC teams other than the champion of the conference. I guess the goal of the new playoffs and we help them by killing ourselves with schedules hardly anyone else plays. These cupcake teams would help with playing more kids, less injuries and a better chance annually of getting to the playoffs.
I keep thinking, we go 11-1 and are kept out of the playoffs. That would be a travesty. Hello Boise State, Indiana, etc.

 

I think there’s a pretty good boxing analogy here. If a boxer wants to go all the way to 10–12, and the outcome is debatable , then he has to live with whatever decisions made.

the way it used to be, cutting it off at four, was like cutting off a close boxing match at four rounds, and then going to the decision card.

This is way better than it used to be, but obviously not perfect.

 

The reality is that if all the non SEC teams in the playoffs this year except maybe Oregon and Ohio State had to play an SEC schedule none of them would be in the playoffs. That means more than half the teams playing for a national championship would not survive an SEC schedule with a record that would have only 2 losses to allow them to compete in this playoff. If they really did take the 12 best teams in the country you would have at least 6 SEC schools playing for the championship. USC, Ole Miss, Bama, and maybe A&M are better than almost half the playoff field but can't participate because that would mean too many SEC teams in the field. The SEC would be better served to have an SEC tournament with all teams making it and playing only SEC teams to crown a champion and then maybe have the SEC champion play the champion of all other conferences if they want to have a tournament. The current system is just setup to give weaker conferences a better opportunity.

 

The BIG10 having 4 teams in is a joke. Not much more I can really say about that.

If I remember correctly, the SEC got 2 teams into the 4-team playoffs twice. Both times they met in the finals. It will be interesting to see how many wins the BIG10 gets this year with 4 teams in as opposed to the SEC with only 3 teams in. I wouldn't be surprised if the SEC gets 5 or 6 wins, and the BIG 10 only gets 1 or 2. Obviously, a lot of that will ride on Tennessee's performance.

Basically, the SEC has made it's money in the past with the BCS (two-team playoffs) and the four-team playoffs. It will be interesting to see if it continues with the 12-team playoffs.

 

I think this was obvious it was going to happen the minute ink hit paper on the structure of the current playoff. UF has cancelled a bunch or their home and homes since that happened (Cal, NC St). They should cancel them all, the SEC is competition enough to get you in the playoff with 2 losses even if you play Joe's Night School 4 times a year.

 

They should try to cancel those games. They generate a lot of fan interest, but there isn't an upside for winning them anymore when we play an SEC schedule, and a whole lot of downside if we lose. This whole new playoff structure being chosen 100% by a "committee" is a crock of BS along with the SEC decision to grab the $$ with no divisions anymore. Its almost as bad as the original bowl system that had conference ties no matter where teams were ranked.

 

I would. Penn St alone is getting two wins solely because of their cushy draw. I don't seen Tenn winning at tOSU and then beating Oregon as well on the West Coast. B1G is probably going to get two teams into the semis.

 

I don't mind playing UM, but playing both UM and FSU along with our conference schedule is dumb in the current environment. I would like it if we could switch off every two years thus keeping both as rivals, but it seem like most of the folks here want to keep FSU and ditch UM.

 

We shall see! This thing is set up for the BIG10. Let's see if they can deliver... Looking at the rankings, I would agree with you on PSU. But then again, can PSU win TWO big games in a row???

 

The SEC was pretty competitive this year, while the BIG was top-heavy as usual. PSU is probably the worst 11-2 team in the history of 11-2 teams and Indiana, even though I love them getting in, beat 0 teams that had any shot at winning the BIG.

 

Tough schedule kept them out? If that's all that kept them out then with 5 losses we should've been in ahead of Bama. Three of the teams that beat us are in the playoffs, and Miami, one of the teams that beat us but didn't make it in was in the first two out. We literally have more of a leg to stand on than Bama. Hell, we didn't lose to the worst Oklahoma team since John Blake was there.

Interestingly, they probably got in on the back of a W against an SEC team on the road.

 

I have no problem with getting in this year. My problem is they get to smash Indiana and claim a playoff win, which they wouldn't have gotten vs. virtually anyone else.

 

I agree. There needs to be room for tradition and rivalry. I miss the days we played Auburn every year.

 

That is if the CFP committee doesn't make any changes based on this year's experience. They very well may.
