The situation in Syria has to effect the Russian plans for Ukraine. They cannot afford to lose their Black Sea port as it is their only quick, cheap access to the Med.
I saw Syria referred to in an article as the "southern front" of Pootie's war on Ukraine. Losing that navy base and a toehold in the ME is a big deal.
It is a Med port we are talking about. Russia has already effectively lost use of its Black Sea ports due to the max effective range of Ukrainian weapons.
Note of interest on the above: Trump states Russia's death toll in Ukraine is 600,000~. Is that based on intel he firmly believes or is he simply overstating it to hold leverage over Russia? I think it's the latter. Not because he knows definitively it's untrue, but because he knows it won't be questioned in the west and why acknowledge a lower number if you don't have to? In any case, for all the DNC lapdogs here, Trump putting that sort of number on Russia's losses in Ukraine isn't doing Putin any favors - at all.
I think that number is very high unless we are talking about the total number of dead for both sides, including civilians and missing civilians. But my guess is that he just misstated. Conservative estimates of Russian military killed in action are right around 200,000 and climbing.
I know, I am just saying that they have already given up their Syrian ports so their only quick access to the Med is from Crimea, which is why they might want to end the Ukrainian war quickly to preserve that access.

That Trump is stating all of this in Zelenskyy's presence should be a big relief for certain ones in this thread, but you won't see them acknowledge it. It is amazing to me that it is Trump in France now seizing upon this opportunity and he's not even POTUS yet. Where's Biden?
It's not a good look, but maybe it allows them to shift all those forces to Ukraine. Not sure what their troop presence "was" in Syria, but it couldn't hurt. Politically, though, it has to be a huge embarrassment and a big loss in the grander strategic picture.

That, too, is a possibility. Many people conflate the two terms. Casualties refers to dead, wounded, and missing. That number could very well be north of 600K for Russia.
