And the issue isn't whether Gaetz should be prosecuted it's whether he has the qualities to be the country's chief law enforcement officer and the Senators who will be voting to confirm him for the position to which he has been nominated should have access to all relevant information regarding his background including the findings of a Committee of Congress that has been investigating him for well over a year.

Johnson and the GOP are not going to hide credible wrongdoing. That would be a disaster in waiting. Imagine if something leaks after he's confirmed. Johnson wouldn't live it down. I think if there was something there, Johnson lets the report out, because nobody would be able to blame him for it and Trump would simply nominate someone else. I believe Johnson is loyal to Trump, but Johnson's not going to take a bullet for Trump just because Trump wants him to. We are talking about the Speaker of the House. He's pretty a powerful man in his own right.

Disagree. Like most of the Republicans in Congress is Johnson is a sycophant who when Trump says "Jump!" MAGA Mike asks "How high, sir?". The one time Johnson actually had the balls to act independently was when he supported aid to Ukraine over the objections of Trump. Probably will never happen again especially after Trump takes office. If the report isn't released voluntarily there is a very good chance that it will be leaked before the Senate even starts holding hearings on the Gaetz nomination.

You wouldn't be able to cite one example where Trump has been able to get any high ranking GOP congressperson to bury incriminating evidence. It is also not in Trump's best interests to do this. He can put anybody in the AG seat. He doesn't need Gaetz, but he would sure like to have him.

"How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."

I actually read an op-ed somewhere that made the Gaetz nomination very clear; in addition to being the kind of lawless sycophant who will assist Trump in continuing to face zero consequences for breaking the law......

........Gaetz is a litmus test for the Republican party. He's just the latest bite of the elephant that Republicans are forced to consume, until, well, it's too late. The Trumpy elephant is consumed and polluting their digestive tract. It's an act of forcing submission. (to further lawlessness, one could actually argue)

In a related vein, it's similar to how Trump got the Republican base to accept the "elephant" of his vileness - one bite at a time. First his un-American McCain comments, his sexual assaults, his racism, his lies, "grab em by the ****", his fraud, his crime, etc. etc.

They consume one bite of the elephant at a time, and the next bite's easier. And they have to subconsciously justify their prior consumption with further support.

It's no secret by now. Sad, but obvious.

Sorry Rik but it is a Pub-led House committee that investigated Gaetz and it's their (not Deep State) findings that should be available to the Senate. If the report is not damaging, why hide it from the Senate which is Constitutional charged to determine his moral suitability for the office. We already know his qualifications are lacking since he's never been a Federal prosecutor, nor run a large organization. In fact he was basically a windbag, ineffective representative as well : " When it comes to lawmaking, the CEL ranked him the second-least effective Florida congressperson, with only eleven bills sponsored (one of them commemorative), none of them significant, and none of them making it to committee."
Webster, Gaetz ranked Florida's least effective Congressional lawmakers in 2023 list

I will stand by what I said in the fourth post in this thread. One other point is what will the left's reaction be when Trump or the new AG asks for all US attorneys to resign?

Well, there shouldn't much of a reaction to that at all by Dems and I sense that you know why. But we'll see what others say about it. :D

The requested resignation of all incumbent US attorneys is the norm when a new administration takes office. It always happens regardless of which party won the presidential election. The question is will any of the US Attorneys from the previous administration be held over (usually a few are) and much more significantly who will Trump and his AG be nominating to replace the departed US attorneys? Will the newly appointed US attorneys be appointed on the basis competence or will loyalty to Trump be the overriding criterion regardless of experience or competence? If there is objection from the left it will not be because the sitting US attorneys were forced to resign but because their replacements are incompetent sycophants.

You realize you totally contradict yourself when you say 'lawfare is real' followed by 'If they had something on Gaetz, I see about zero chance DOJ just drops it', right?

Trump nominated Gaetz as AG because he couldn't nominate himself. Matt Gaetz is essentially Donald Trump's "mini me". Trump nominated Gaetz for two closely related reasons. First, to use the DOJ as retribution against Trump's perceived enemies and secondly to fire those DOJ officials and to restructure DOJ agencies that Trump feels haven't been sufficiently loyal to the Dear Leader the first time he was in office, Christopher Wray and the FBI being prime examples. The fact that Gaetz has absolutely no experience managing a large organization and that his legal credentials probably couldn't get him a position as an entry level Assistant US Attorney are irrelevant.
