Here's the interesting thing about Gaetz and the position that President-elect Trump has tabbed him for. The President of the Senate is the Vice-President JD Vance, and he can make it easier for President-elect Trump to get his cabinet appointments in during a congressional recess. Or... Governor of Florida can simply select Gaetz to be the Senator of Florida that replaces Marco Rubio. So, do the RINOs want him in the Senate, or will they play ball with Trump and confirm him as the AG? What a strange situation the RINOs in the Senate are in.
I rthink Trump knows this is DOA but Gaetz immediate resignation from the House kills the internal Ethics committee investigation against him so Trump is giving Gaetz a face saving path out of the House. Public will never see report.
Well we don’t execute kids anymore... But the state argued in 2014 his conviction should stand. I don’t think we’ve rooted out injustice. Plenty of “innocence project” examples that are almost as flimsy cases.
Maybe there is gold in this move... I'll bet either Gaetz is the next Senator of Florida, or he's the next AG. By the way... his past, if you can call it one, is a state issue (statutory refers to a state law issue) not a federal issue.
The leaders of the Senate and the House, in the new 119th Congress, are BOTH controlled by the REPUBLICANS... And the president of the Senate is J.D. Vance. What the Dems thought they could do to Gaetz in the House was DOA.
While I haven’t talked to anyone in the know about it, I’m pretty confident DeSantis is not going to give serious consideration to appointing Matt Gaetz to the open Senate seat.

There are a whole world of options that are just as conservative as Gaetz, but who are DeSantis folks rather than Trump people. There’s also the background of the 2026 gubernatorial race (where a lot of the people who would be under consideration for that Senate seat, plus Gaetz, are viewed as likely candidates) plus the question of what Ron wants to do once he leaves the governors mansion (which could potentially include running in the special election for that Senate seat himself) since I think it’s highly unlikely that the expiration of his gubernatorial term is the end of his political career. Shorter answer? Appointing Gaetz is seemingly bad politics.

Dems are the ones attempting to make it all about the economy, from what I have seen. But make no mistake, nobody is getting elected as POTUS with 91 felony indictments unless the people think said indictments are political weaponization. The fact that "democracy" was the #1 leading issue with Dem voters illustrates how lost the Democrat party is right now. They attempted to take Trump down with lawfare and it backfired. Now they have no platform to run on. No success to point to. Even if Trump barely wins the popular vote, this election was a mandate due to: 91 indictments, 3rd time running, being outspent 3-to-1 by the opposition. You're just going to have to suck it up.
I am not and have not ranted over the election. I’m just commenting on the messaging of the “why” by many of the Republicans on this board, and of course, my friends, family and colleagues. It’s been pretty much a consensus that it was more to do with the economy and/or a dislike of Kamala-Biden than am affirmation of Trump and his “troubles”, both before, during and after his presidency. Your serial middle-finger posting seems at odds with most people I know and talk to. Obviously, given your middle-finger proclivities, we know where you stand. I’m interested in the thoughts of others.

Yes, of course the economy and immigration were the two leading issues of the race, but if voters "dislike" Kamala-Biden, then they can equally dislike someone with 91 felony indictments, but they chose to like that person more. I hate to see you guys keep going back to this well runneth dry. Casting Trump as a criminal has failed you. The sooner you accept this, the sooner your party can move on to better days. If Dem constituents continue this Trump is a felon narrative, Vance will win in 2028 absent a bad economy. Dems need to develop an actual platform and one that does not include political weaponization of the DOJ as a strategy.
And the more practical answer is that Senate seat will likely already be filled before they know whether Gaetz’s nomination crashed and burned or not. The Senate margin is narrow enough that you don’t want Murkowski and Collins to be the only deciding votes on nominations, and Rubio will likely be one of the easiest confirmations and thus probably isn’t hanging around the Senate to vote on other nominations first, so look for Ron to fill Rubio’s seat (once it officially becomes vacant) very, very quickly before the confirmation processes in the Senate really heat up.
