    Hurricane Milton

The problem is that Florida relies heavily on Port Tampa Bay for fuel deliveries from Gulf Coast refineries. More than 43% of Florida’s gas, diesel and jet fuel moves through the critical piece of infrastructure.

While Port Tampa Bay reopened on Saturday morning after avoiding the catastrophic flooding that some feared, it has not been operating at full strength. Vessel movement has been restricted to daylight and one-way travel, slowing down the port’s ability to receive fuel. Another issue is that analysts say some fuel terminals near Port Tampa Bay and Port Manatee have not reopened. That is limiting how much fuel these terminals can receive from vessels and prepare to be loaded onto trucks for delivery.

DeSantis's Institutes Free Gas Initiative Amid Rising Climate Concerns in Florida (msn.com)

In a strategic response to the gas shortages exacerbated by Hurricane Milton, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has launched a new initiative to distribute free gas to residents affected by the storm. At a press conference, DeSantis detailed plans for three initial gas distribution sites along Florida’s western coast. These sites, located in Plant City, Bradenton, and St. Petersburg, are part of a broader effort to provide up to 10 gallons of free gas daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with additional sites planned in response to demand.

The initiative not only seeks to address the current fuel shortage but also involves substantial state funding, including $9.5 million announced by DeSantis during a visit to SeaPort Manatee. This funding is targeted at repairing and enhancing port facilities but also crucially aims to ensure the continued flow of fossil fuels into the state, emphasizing the strategic importance of fossil fuel logistics in Florida's disaster response and economic stability.

I've been watching several YouTube videos about Helene and Milton and their aftermath. This one is really well done and goes a good job of capturing the fury of Milton. Some of the satellite imagery is amazing.

I realize this is OT, but this video does an incredible job of showing the utter devastation of Fort Myers Beach by Ian. A 22+ minute split screen video of a vehicle(s) driving the exact same path of travel before and after the storm. It is astonishing how much of FMB was simply gone, either from the hurricane itself or cleanup efforts.

Yea, brings home the devastation pretty well. I grew up in FM, still have good friends there, never a fan of the beach area but it's gonna be a long tough go for those folks.
Sanibel will be back much quicker. Still a lot to rebuild but have a friend with a timeshare in Sanibel, said it's good to go.
