Two women social media influencers in Brazil apparently died after refusing to wear life jackets that would interfere with their tanning. Thus, the amazing extremes of technology: on one hand you have AI and on the other hand you have human beings essentially dying for fame.

Their reasoning was dumb, but failure to wear a life jacket isn’t Darwin Award level stuff. I see a lot of people failing to wear life jackets. I guess if the boat is moving fast enough, it’s akin to not wearing a seatbelt.

If you are looking for Darwin Award winners. There have been several hundred selfie related deaths in the last couple decades.

Captain also should have refused. Idc who was "ordering" him to overload the boat and take them back, he should have refused to overload, and he should have refused to go anywhere until they had donned the life vests.

I know which side of the camera I belong on. most of my pics are from a safe place anyway. Sometimes being close to sea level has its advantages. Sunday sunrise at Lovers Key, bait was plentiful, snook were everywhere. It was a good day. Hurricanes sure changed some of the beaches and inlets

I don't think I've worn a life jacket on a boat since I was a little kid, including hundreds of dive trips back when I taught SCUBA lessons. No one did.

With seas like that it was a dumb move in addition to the extra person on the boat but yes in standard conditions adults who can swim do not wear life jackets usually on a boat.

Maybe they thought their own, uhh..., "personal flotation devices" would have been enough.

We took 42' dive boat from West Palm Beach to West End, Grand Bahama. It was a night crossing and the Gulfstream was really kicking up...we had 11-13 foot seas. No life jackets, but we had a rope that reached out to the dive platform to tie around our waists when we went out there to pee. That was a fun trip, it was like being on a very extended ride at the fair. Return trip 5 days later...flat and calm.

another freak accident claims a surfing influencer

An Italian surfer died last week after she was impaled by a swordfish while she was surfing in Indonesia, local media reported.

Giulia Manfrini, 36, of northern Italy, was in the water in Mentawai Islands Regency, an area that draws surfers from around the world, according to the Indonesian news agency Antara.

“Unexpectedly, a swordfish jumped towards Manfrini and struck her squarely in the chest,” Lahmudin Siregar, acting head of the Mentawai Islands’ Disaster Management Agency, told Antara on Friday.

sometimes it's the character as much as the size of the wave. sounds like a good time, for a young man...got caught offshore in the gulf once on waves close to that size when a cold front accelerated and moved in early. in a 19' boat. west when we could, south when we had to. left out of Boca Grande, found shore in south Ft Myers beach. that is the one time I told everyone to put on life jackets. surfing in a center console and stuffed it more than once. glad my mates that day were experienced.
