One light in this darkness: being a coach can mean a generation of immortality. Some of his players will remember him and speak of him until they pass many decades from now. My high school wrestling coach...I'm in my late fifties and I think about that man several times a week.
Obviously not Even remotely important but I wonder if this affects our season tip off game against them
Yeah - I had that thought. What do they do? There isn't a game the next day, that would likely get cancelled / rescheduled. But just over a week away?... What is the appropriate amount of time? I really don't know, but I would have to assume they'll play the schedule as it is. "The show must go on." "Coach would want us to play." etc. I hope that UF works with USF to do something thoughtful at the game - that is in accordance with USF's desires...
Agree. Abdur-Rahim guided the South Florida men's team to one of the biggest turnarounds in the country last season, leading the Bulls to a program-record 25 wins and their first American Athletic Conference regular-season title. Prior to Abdur-Rahim taking over in 2023, the school had never finished .500 in the AAC and had ended above .500 overall just once since 2012. He was selected as the AAC Coach of the Year.
Sad story. Sadder for his family. He had a great first year at USF and seemed to have a very bright coaching future.
Golden and he were friends, we will be more than accommodating on the schedule and I’m sure more than gracious in how we honor him if it gets played on time.
There will certainly be something to honor Abdur-Rahim at the game. But canceling or rescheduling an event set 11 days later is not appropriate. Lots of things are affected by such a decision... tickets sold, rooms booked and paid for, venue booked, finding a new schedule date. Essentially, big events are rescheduled only when there's a threat of danger, such as a hurricane approaching. On top of that, I'm sure the USF players will want badly to compete in order to help get past the grief.
