How much football are we actually watching?

I was more impressed with the work shown, including the hand written charts and graphs than the actual answer.

 

Do we really need the wives finding this out?

 

I watch RedZone pretty religiously, especially the early games. And it pretty much stays on at least one TV all day.

For College, I'll watch UF and maybe glance at the score or a couple of minutes of other games. I doubt I've watched more than 10 straight minutes of any team not named Gators.

 

And this is exactly why I've become an EPL fan.

 

Yep, there's more action during a golf tournament than during a football game. Not as intense, but steadier.

Not including Red Zone. That's nothing but football for 7+ hours.

 

Whatever. 50 minutes commercial free, 15 minute halftime, 50 minutes commercial free, done and dusted.

 

I only watch gators too but when I did watch nfl. Red zone was legit

Same stuff happens in soccer. In soccer, it would be like breaking it down to when plays are actually happening (take out kicking it back to your keeper, for example, or delays on corner or free kicks or penalty kick or when goals are scored and celebrated). There's plenty of down time in soccer; the main difference is the clock is continuously running.

You might want to watch a modern game. I don't buy this at all, but I get the backhanded attempt to slam soccer. Yeah, let's parse out the second it takes to pass it back to the keeper and him pass it to another player because "that doesn't count as actual soccer". Come on man. If you don't like it, fine. But don't just make shit up.

If this was 50 years ago when the keepers could pick the ball up, fine. But that's not the way the game's played anymore.

 

How so? Is it not football? You talk about how much actual football is in a game. Well, RZ is all football, and it's popularity is probably due to exactly what you're discussing here. Unless you're just married to game script, there is literally no reason to watch a full game on Sunday (not counting prime time games - which I also tune into and out of).

 

My only complaint about soccer (particularly US soccer) is they do a horrible job of promoting their game and helping fans who are potentially interested in following understand what they are playing for and the timing of the events. It's brutal.

I just think people oversell the continuous clock as continuous action. Not making anything up. Yes, it doesn't have down time like football, but it's not like Rugby 7's where there is legitimately continuous action either.

No, it's more like watching baseball. Static energy followed by bursts of kinetic energy. But there is this constant, underlying tension going on at all times. With VAR, you could argue time is wasted there. Much more in terms of those kinds of delays than before VAR.
