Iran was launching an unknown number of missiles at Israel this evening, lighting up the skies over the cities of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. A military spokesman said that Israel's air defense system was "fully operational, detecting and intercepting threats wherever necessary." Earlier, White House and Defense Department officials said Iran was preparing to launch a ballistic missile attack at Israel after its invasion of southern LebanonWashington is actively supporting preparations to defend its ally, the White House official said, warning of "severe consequences for Iran." Israel earlier announced the invasion of southern Lebanon, launching what it calls a "limited, localized and targeted" ground operation aimed at pushing Hezbollah forces farther away from the border. It follows weeks of escalating conflict with the Iran-backed militant group, which is reeling from the killing of its powerful leader Hassan Nasrallah. Both the U.S. and Israel warned Iran, which has vowed to respond to the expanding Israeli attacks on its proxies across the Middle East. Intense Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,000 people and displaced as many as 1 million in recent weeks, Lebanese officials say. The country "is facing one of the most dangerous stages in its history," its prime minister said this morning. https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/...dates-idf-ground-operation-lebanon-rcna173389
Israel leading us right into a regional war, what a fine ally we have. Seems like they are doing the speed run of what we did in Afghanistan (the war of retaliation) and Iraq (the war we wanted all along).
Video of them impacting. Many were not intercepted. https://www.reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/s/R9PUyECQGA
So when do we start making the hard decisions needed to remove ourselves completely from this region? What is the benefit when we get less than 10% of our oil from the ME these days? Maybe if we just walked away completely, it would force these fools to get something figured out.
Same (or similar) video from a different source. The first one appears to have been edited. Looks like most of the missiles were intercepted. Live Updates: Iran Launches Over 100 Ballistic Missiles at Israel - NY Times
What is the point of picking sides in this mess? This response almost feels conditioned by a certain political bubble. There are no good guys. There are no bad guys. Just a bunch of fools and scumbags.
We already picked sides along time ago, with pretty much zero benefit to us, particularly in this century. But some people seem to want the murder/suicide pact we agreed to.
Fits right into Netanyahu’s speech yesterday to the Iranian people, where he referred to a new government “in the imminent future”. It is ominous.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/10/01/israel-lebanon-hezbollah-hamas-war-news-gaza/ TEL AVIV — Israel told its residents late Tuesday following a barrage of Iranian missiles that they were clear to emerge from sheltered areas, as no additional oncoming threats were identified in the air. Many missiles were intercepted, Israeli military spokesman Daniel Hagari said, but there were “a few hits” in central and southern Israel. He said that while the military was still assessing the situation, it was not aware of any casualties.
What's Israel's end game here? From where I sit, there is none. So why escalate? Because Netanyahu wants to save his own political legacy and remain in power. Sad reason to go to full out war. We have had good reasons to remain allies with Israel. But Biden warned them not to escalate. Hope we don't blindly support Israel in this, even if I have family that lives there. Two wrongs don't make a right, and there's no good that will ultimately come of this. Just more death and destruction on both sides.
If the middle east wants to commit mutual suicide, go for it. Leave the rest of the world out of it. All those people do is kill each other. eff em.
Bush I had a deal on the table, was pushing back hard on Israel to end the settlements or he'd cut them off. . . . But the usual suspects did the usual thing and rejected it. And our reasons for picking sides, while cynical, make perfect sense given the working relationship between our defense departments and industries. And then there's the part nobody here wants to say: Everyone hates them! Israel tried to give Gaza back to Egypt and Egypt said Hell the F NO! Jordan doesn't want anymore. Nobody wants them nor do they want responsibility for them. On Oct 7, HAMAS made the bet that the Arab world would rise up to defend them. . . . Well, we're still waiting! Big miscalculation, because it's pretty evident the Saudis aren't willing to trade their gold-plated bathroom tile for the Palestinian cause. MBS is pissed because he wanted to expand and bring his relationship with Israel into the light of day, so they'll get nothing from him. They have no friends outside of western liberals, so it's just a waiting game at this point. And they did it to themselves on Oct 7. I said it that day, "They just signed their own death warrant."
