UK has shut down (ok - slowed down) two offenses that are considered good/elite. Stoops knows what he's doing with defense. If we don't get a lot better at stopping the run, it will be long day for Gators in a few weeks. The two times I've watched them, they look like UGAs D.
Didn't hire him based on that either. That was the point. The whole family values for football coaches is kind of humorous in my book. Public perception is often not reality.
This is a good result for a couple of reasons: 1. We don’t want Ole Miss making the playoffs. We need Kiffin to say “deuces” right after the Egg Bowl and start recruiting Gators. 2. Related to #1, we want Kiffin to feel like he’s peaked at Ole Miss. 3. We want him to come here with hate in his heart for Kentucky. 4. We want to keep his contract reasonable until he starts winning serious ball games.
For people down on Lane right now, I bet if you compared the last 4 recruiting classes, Kentucky has superior recruits over Ole Miss. And this is why Lane would come to Gainesville in a heartbeat. He will never be able to have a perennial SEC blue blood roster at Ole Miss. At Florida, he would clean up in recruiting. I'm talking #1 classes. He can't do that at Ole Miss. If Stoops is out-recruiting him at UK, that should tell you all you need to know. Ole Miss will still win 10 games this year. But hopefully we got a bit of a Kentucky discount today on Lane's contract.
I think this has to be in the back of Lane's mind, if not at the forefront of his mind after today's loss. Kentucky has turned some decent recruiting classes in the past few years. It's really hard to sell kids on Mississippi and there is a severe dearth of in-state talent. Come on home, Lane.
Sure, that shouldn't be the ceiling ("we require the most family values ever!") But certainly there's a floor?
Wake Forest trailing Louisiana at home in the 4th. Wake is by far Ole Miss's best win this year, after 5 games.
What about recent (past decade) recruiting by Lane or any of UF's coaches would lead you to think this?
He was Saban's point man on recruiting offense for a reason. And he has recruited well enough to elevate Ole Miss to where they are. My point on recruiting is he has a ceiling at Ole Miss and no matter how hard he goes after it, he'll never land top classes there. He may get lucky every now and then, but in this league, you need top 5 classes every single year without letup. He'll never be able to do that at Ole Miss. Guarantee you he could do it at Florida. Even Napier pulls recruits at Florida. My dog could pull recruits at Florida. Yes, I said it.
But wons/losses are. Kiffin has yet to really prove himself a championship coach. USCw hated him so bad they fired him in the most humiliating way. He had all the resources he needed to win there. Has he won at Ole Miss? Sure; so did Hugh Freeze. But still no championships, and he won't get one this year, imo. Kiffin is a huge gamble, with major sketchiness in his history.
Kiffin would recruit at Meyer levels at Florida. He's always been known for his recruiting, which is why Saban hired him. Think about this, would Nick Saban have put a mediocre recruiter in as OC at Bama? Kiffin's job was to literally seal the deal with the nation's top offensive recruits and create a scheme to maximize their talents. That is what we want.
Alabama had top classes for well over a decade regardless of Lanes presence. That has to be the most illogical argument you could have put forward.
Saban and Alabama recruited lights out before and after Kiffy. Saban needed an OC, and Kiffy was it. It is also true that Saban and Kiffy had a VERY testy relationship. For some fun, watch Kiffin's Krimson Korner with Tosh.
