Hanging out with FSU grads leaves that impression.

Having a zero tolerance policy for mostly peaceful protests probably contributed to the plummeting rating. It is impossible to fall that far in one year.

When the WSJ starts getting labelled "woke", you know the word has never had any meaning. Some wild posts in this thread.

No. They are being punished for making it financially impossible for folks who would otherwise qualify to get in. They reduced acceptance of Bright Futures scholarships and have weeded out anyone from particular wealth class. This is why you see only
Luxury apartments being built, long time dives, restaurants and businesses being replaced (see Leonardo’s, purple porpoise etc), no more student ghetto… it’s been the Miamification of Gainesville and most of us locals hate it. We are the ones who live here- your teachers, nurses, folks that make your food and cut your lawn and support UF long term and it’s become ridiculously expensive to live here and the town is littered with entitled snots who hit it and quit it after 4 years.

But that's been going on for decades. This nosedive seems to have happened in the past year.

Personally, I would trade high rankings for better access for qualified Florida residents.

If this is true, we deserve it. Get rid of carpetbaggers coming in here with their academic snobbery and telling us how we can and can't cheer for starters! If you don't want to deal with athletics, then stay the hell out of our traditions.

This post (if accurate) seems to have the answer but was lost among the political snipings going back and forth.
Why did our rank fall? Because the methodology changed per this post.
Was it a change to be more accurate, or not, then would be the pertinent question.
I don't know, but a list which has Bentley University ahead of Cal Tech provides a possible answer.

So it's not DEI, DeSantis, football, Sasse, the Palestine protests, or something else. Unless those were part of the change of methodology.

The nose dive has correlated with the administration interference and should surprise no one that it resulted in a drop. When an administration actively seeks to attack minority populations within its own ranks, the quality drops. Hell, even Texas isn’t so dumb as to actively screw with Austin or College Station. The best and brightest students is the goal of every institution of higher learning. The lower ranking is a direct reflection of value of the education and experience for the price. Did any of you really think removing student engagement and networking opportunities would make the state schools more appealing or provide greater opportunity? If so, that person needs their head checked.

As for access for residents, there is an appropriate institution for all of the students based on the merit of the student. To willing wish for lower standards so Jr. can go to his favorite football school is ridiculous. If Jr. can’t make freshman admission, then Jr. can go somewhere else and transfer in after bettering his resume. Life isn’t fair and Jr. doesn’t get a pass because he’s a legacy or a big fan who attended 120 games before graduating high school. Jr. can attend FIU, UWF, or any other colleges for which he qualified.

U.S. News didn’t change the algorithm and UF dropped. That’s really the only ranking that matters. Think of WSJ, Forbes, and others as the academic versions of the Harris Poll or AP Poll post playoffs, they’re irrelevant.

I told my kids years ago that almost every university has former students who have become successful and are millionaires.

My wife’s college even had someone donate enough money that they renamed the college after him.

common theme at many schools -- in the 90s we paid $250 a month, now most rents are $1000 a month.
The concept of dumpy place is no more -- replace the old with the new.
fancy restaurants with bars replaces bars, more upscale eating -- cheap is no more

the great con at UF is their freshman online program in my opinion -- full price right?

good news though, the house we rented across from PK young is still there, and it was a 7 bedroom dump, but man was it awesome!

So the ratings dropped as a backlash to conservative politics just like I said.

Can I trade 20 ranking points for an undefeated season and a natty? If so, I'll devalue my degree.

No, because items previously offered were removed such as clubs, leadership opportunities within clubs, networking, and reduced class availability. But if you think it’s because of conservative politics, you aren’t entirely wrong. The conservative agenda lessened the university’s capacity to offer more than just Greek life and classes the administration deemed worthy. They damaged the brand, just like our coaches over the last ten years. Congratulations? o_O

Conversely, if liberals had removed conservative studies and Greek life, the same effect would happen. See my original post about the coexistence of conservative and liberal studies.

Anybody who seriously thinks a large public university can fall from numero uno, the best of the best, down to #34 in the span of one year probably does not need to be engaging in a conversation about improving academics.

Why is everyone making this political? We dropped because the cost of living in FL increased dramatically. Look at the methodology of the scores and it’s clear. Has nothing to do with UF prez, governor, DEI, etc.
obviously the methodology is ridiculous based on the results (but it wasn’t last year!)
