Fundamental restructuring of UF football

Well Bama is paying $800k to a guy that is apparently effectively the General Manager of the football organization.


So we aren’t too far from changes that are being discussed.

 

That is the potential issue in the past looking for someone who already did it. Only saban and meyer were able to catch lightening at separate schools. Our focus should have been on coaches demonstrating an ability to win games and assemble teams/programs. This required a longer window success. Todays environment allows a greater margin of error when navigating a season with potentially 8 additional slots at the table for the championship chase. The second idea that is of paramount importance to GN is wide open offense none since UM have had this.

 

Meyer had high level success at two school before Florida, including a non flukey undefeated season

Saban had strong success at Mich State and won a natty at LSU before Bama.

Both profiles are very very different than up and comers Muschamp, Mac, and Napier.

 

I kind of like the idea of a GM in charge of building the roster. I don't know if NCAA rules would allow for that

 

I will never trust anything that has the word fundamental and change in the same sentence... never.

 

What rule would prevent it?

 

Well, you can’t pay a kid to play football. So there are some stupid freaking rules.

 

Okay. It’s pretty much wide open for staff size though. I don’t think there’s a rule that prevents this.

 

I think we could get the same effect if the university used a hiring committee. In fact, I'm surprised they don't do that. When a university hires a law school dean, they often will form a hiring committee composed of people from both inside the university and outside in the community at large who have some stake and interest and knowledge in how to bring someone in to run the law school. The decision is ultimately up to the president or provost but it's informed by these other people.

we should have split the difference knowing we werent going to recreate our 2 ultra successful coaches. Someone with 5+ years of stable success not newbies and not chasing ghosts that negatively impacted the hiring process by making us look desperate after racking up no’s

 

While they allowed for more on-field coaches, they didn't do anything to the limitations on who can recruit off campus. I don't remember the numbers, but I believe only on-field coaches are allowed to recruit off campus, and there is a limit to how many of them can recruit off campus. So having a GM type who just did recruiting wouldn't fit into those limitations.

 

Noooo, nooooo, noooo. Get rid of all corporate structure and bring in an absolute animal! Maybe a Chadwell type of dude.

 

Napier was that dude.

 

Not in a power 5 conference and not after rising above other serious candidates. He also lacked the offensive firepower gators crave. SS “zeroed” in on him. Its a crap shoot finding a guy but your odds decline drastically when you churn thru coaches every 3-4 years as has been discussed here previously

 

Nah, we'll get a draft and players union instead. Joy!

 

If the Florida Gators weren't part of the University of Florida I probably wouldn't watch them very often nor would I read or post about them here on Gator country. I'd probably cheer for the Jacksonville Jaguars and a couple of other NFL teams instead.

 

It got pretty sullied last week. I'm of the same mindset you are with regard to all the things we used to love about college football but that stuff is gone imo. If we want to watch a team called the Florida Gators that can actually go out there and compete, we have to play this game. We had an advantage that we may have completely squandered in that we were considered an elite program. So yeah, I'm in favor of using our name recognition, resources, media market and hopefully 100 lb brains compared to our southern rivals to do whatever we can to win. Otherwise we'll just keep seeing that crap we saw last week.

 

Union I could see happening. Draft, no way, not unless a new league is formed with a whole lot less teams.

 

Unfortunately (or not), we care about larger things than just football. They (our Gomer rivals), DON'T. So, that's always going to be a hill for us to climb with respect to the usual suspects. The other thing is that UF (and FSU and UM) just isn't the job it used to be. Used to be that just being in Florida was seen as a major advantage. But, looking at last year, only 6 of the top 20 players stayed in state last year (split evenly among the "big" 3) with UGa getting almost as many as the "big" 3 combined. That's a trend that goes back over a decade and I don't see changing either.

So, you know, we've got that going for us too.
