For historical perspective, Gainesville's Oak Hall School and Martha Manson Academy, were both founded in 1969 and 1970 as segregationist schools. Oak Hall was founded as a high school by two Gainesville physicians, Dr Harry L Walker - a surgeon and his friend Dr Billy Brashear, a family practitioner/pediatrician. Martha Manson academy began in an old Victorian house in downtown Gainesville before moving to a new bldg adjacent to Oak Hall on Tower Road in the early 70's. The two school later merged. A WCJB article published online in August, 2023 announced Oak Hall was telling families on their website they would not be accepting any state-funded scholarship tuition for the 2023/24 school year. Yearly tuition for grades 9 through 12 is currently $19,990. The school's website states "We believe students from all backgrounds should have access to the highest quality education, regardless of socio-economic factors. As part of our commitment to helping families navigate tuition costs, we offer need-based financial assistance for grades K-12." The elite private schools in Atlanta are not accepting vouchers, but have financial aid available and several award scholarships to deserving students funded from donations to the schools' endowment programs. The current annual tuition for grades 6 through 12 at the Westminster Schools in Atlanta is $38,560. It includes lunch.
