Saw them and Chicago together about 20 years back. Chicago is my all time favorite band. I grew up on the 80's pop stuff, but later fell in love with the stuff from before my time. Both bands were still bringing it pretty strong a couple decades back.
Kokomo = huge turd. Embarrassingly awful, imo No surprise Mike Love co-wrote it. Pretty obvious Brian Wilson had no part of that one. Get on Pet Sounds immediately. One of the greatest if not the greatest rock album ever made. Penned way beyond the abilities of his bandmates and that’s no slight on them at all. They’ve all said it themselves. Only The Wrecking Crew could have brought Brian Wilson’s vision to life. Carol Kaye on bass Glenn Campbell and Tommy Tedescho on guitar Hal Blain on drums And many, many others
"Kokomo" is not a good song, but it was still a huge hit for a reason. If Mike Love could have written 20 other songs that were that big of hits, I'm sure he would have sacrificed various parts of his anatomy to do that. But he couldn't, which proves it still a pretty big accomplishment just to do it once.
To be fair to Mike Love, he did cowrite a bunch of their early hits. I like to shit on him, but he does the lead vocals on my favorite Pet Sounds Track - "Thats Not Me"
He may have his shortcomings, but he was blessed with a great voice, good health, and a lot of energy to keep touring into his 80s. Not everyone can be a creative genius and it's not easy for the ones who are.
A lot of hate on Love but Dennis was said to have brought the cocaine around for Brian. Dennis went off the rails while Love tried to stick close to the musical formula that worked.
Just looked up a picture of Stan Love, his dad. He looks like a cooler version of Mike. Stan is apparently 6'9'' too ... how tall is Mike? Must have been the runt. Apparently he was Brian Wilson's bodyguard and personal trainer for a bit.
Brian Wilson couldn’t be apart of it…he was under 24/7 care of a psychiatrist at the time of this song.
Saw a documentary on Chicago and Peter Cetera said he HATED horns which was a big part of the band and the reason he went solo.
Jefferson Starship went downhill when Marty Balin left. Although I don't think he was that good solo, should've stayed with them.
