Seems like it stalled. One engine slightly more than the other which put it in a spin. Major vibes to all affected including those whose houses were hit. Very sad.
I’ve spent about 2000 hours flying the ATR72. Not aware of any icing in the area but to me that’s a tail stall which if you panic can be difficult to recover because you have to do the opposite of what your instincts tell you. Part of the design of the high T tail. Just horrible
That engine was still running, and it was not moving forward... Looked like the propellers may have been feathered? I mean, the engines were running and the plane was not moving forward. What could cause that to happen?
Brazil’s Civil Aviation Agency said in a statement Friday that the plane that crashed and its crew were fit to fly. The aircraft operated by Voepass that crashed near the city of Vinhedo was “an ATR-72, manufactured in 2010 and in good operating condition, with valid registration and airworthiness certificates,” the statement read. “The flight had four crew members on board at the time of the accident and all were duly licensed and had valid qualifications,” it read. The timeline: The aircraft took off shortly before noon local time, flight tracking data shows. The plane had been cruising at 17,000 feet until 1:21 p.m. local time when it dropped approximately 250 feet in 10 seconds. It then climbed approximately 400 feet in about eight seconds. Eight seconds later, it lost just under 2,000 feet. Then, in approximately one minute, it began rapidly descending — roughly 17,000 feet in just one minute. The crash scene: Brazil’s Civil Defense said the aircraft crashed into multiple houses. No one was killed in the surrounding residential area, Valinhos City Communications Director Ana Cândida Briski said. Aerial images show the nose of the plane and burnt scraps of the plane littering the ground. Witnesses described hearing the plane before it crashed, with one person saying it fell on the roof of an elderly couple’s house. The investigation: Multiple agencies are at the scene of the crash and the Brazilian Air Force team will be in charge of the investigation, according to Vinhedo City Hall. Authorities have found the black box at the crash site, according to Derrite, which will help investigators determine what happened. Voepass said in a statement on its website that it had no information on what caused the crash. https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/plane-crash-brazil-08-09-24/index.html
Yes I understand that. You can pick up icing at altitude. I fly an Airbus A320 now( have about 2000 hours in the ATR72 20 years ago)…… we picked up ice flying into Florida a few days ago. It wasn’t a lot but enough we turned on the engine and wing anti ice. I’ve never flown in Brazil. edit—it’s way too early to tell but it looked like What happens when you stall the tail on that particular plane. Even if both engines quit the first thing you do is nose it over, don’t let too much speed bleed off. Hopefully Keeping airflow going over the wings to retain lift and restart. Pilots train over and over and over for single engine operations. So that shouldnt cause what I saw. Dual engine failure would be a bad day. God Speed to that crew and passengers
Came back to post. unfortunately It was as I suspected. Airframe ice degraded the performance of the aircraft Preliminary Report on the Voepass ATR 72-500 Crash Released by Cenipa - RadarBox.com Blog
