Wow. This always felt like one of those things that should happen, but never would.

 

Long, long overdue…..

 

A positive for the quality of play in D1 college baseball and a very big positive for the young men who play it. But, probably a net negative for the Gators (in that other SEC teams will benefit more), as Sully won't be able to leverage the Bright Futures scholarship quite as efficiently to his advantage.

 

this should increase the number of african americans in college baseball.

 

I don’t think the costs of school is really the limiting factor here. Once they’re that far, there was already all kinds of grants, loans, and academic scholarships available to float them for three or four years.

What really limits the participation of the underprivileged (not just black kids) is the extremely high cost of high level ball at the younger ages. Year round travel ball, camps, and trainers starting at the middle school age are what really make it a sport so expensive and less accessible to those without wealth and parents without flexible schedules.

Do walkons count on your roster count?

 

Under the old rules, they count toward the roster limit. I doubt that it changes in the new rules.

 

I think the reason more blacks play football & basketball is because there are no long bus rides to backwater towns.

Black people certainly hated the Jim Crow laws that required they sit at the back of public buses and, even then, relinquish those seats to whites, but I think it was the laws that were the problem, not the vehicles. Earl Butz may disagree with me. In the case of minor league bus trips, my impression is they are universally disliked.
