Head coach Billy Napier, quarterback Graham Mertz, running back Montrell Johnson Jr. and linebacker Shemar James all spoke to the media. Mertz returns for his final season of college football in 2024. The transfer from Wisconsin had a strong 2023 season, recording career-highs in passing touchdowns, passing yards, completions, completion percentage, passing yards per game and efficiency. Napier admitted UF's fortunes for 24 hinged on getting Mertz back for a final year. It started there. I have grown to admire Mertz. Considering he and Napier were mocked and lampooned about Mertz selection in the portal, I am happy and excited for both. I expect Mertz, if he stays healthy, to far exceed the production, passing, of Anthony Richardson.
Wasn't Mertz rated as the worst-or close to worst- SEC QB preseason 2023 by the sports "journalists"? What a bunch of clowns.
Now that the training wheels appear to be off of Mertz, and giving the overall upgrade of the receiving corps, I expect big things from Mertz and increases in the long ball. That's really the most iconic Gator trait from Gator football... the long ball. Bring it back! The seemingly unsaid reality of ranking a QB in the SEC is the long ball. I think that's why Mertz is NOT mentioned as the top few QB in the SEC. When he opens it up, everything changes...
