'Like a prank': Burlington, Vermont police terrify high school students with fake shooting | WBUR News

While kids were on field trip to a police station for a lesson on forensics, a man in mask burst in a started shooting blanks ... the kids were not warned this was going to happen.

Police said they wanted to give the kids a real-life example of how eyewitness accounts can be inaccurate.

When about 20 Burlington High School students visited the Queen City’s police department headquarters Wednesday for a forensics class, officers staged a mock shooting — complete with a masked assailant and realistic gunshot sounds.

But the demonstration came without apparent warning to the students themselves, who dove for the ground in terror.

One student, who asked to be anonymous, said she crawled underneath a desk and began looking for her phone to text her mother when two screaming women and a man in a ski mask burst into the room and gunshots rang out.

The student said she realized that what was happening wasn't real when officers in the room didn't leap into action. The incident nevertheless reminded her of a time she’d had a firearm pointed at her, and left her crying and “shaken up and shocked.”

    Whoo hoo!

Hard to believe that a group of adults all brainstormed, practiced, and executed this idea.

I remember posting a story years ago about a guy who was denied entry to a police department because his IQ was too high. The court eventually backed the department.
I wonder if this was them.

In their own statement, Burlington police said that the department apologized “to any students in attendance who were upset by the specific scenario and crime scene portion of the presentation.”

    Sorry if you were offended.

The purpose, they wrote, was “to make a point about how witness statements can be unreliable, and detectives wanted the event to be as realistic as possible.”

We wanted to make a point about how citizens are wrong and cops are right, and firing a gun was the only way we could think of to do that.

Mock executions are used by terrorists as literally a form of torture.

Real bullets, leg shots only. Super realistic, kids will take that to heart (well, femur at worst), and a lesson that teachers like me can marvel over from afar.

I've seen 100 through 119 being considered the high end of "average" on some scales ... I mean, my point was this guy wasn't an off the chart's super genius... it does seem wrong to me to deny a person a chance at a job, not even interview him, because he's above average intelligence.

As George Carlin pointed out, the average IQ is 100. Half of humanity is below that.
