I believe the 96 game was at UT when Spurrier went for it on 4th and 10, Danny to Reidel for a TD? Ballz.
Yep in 1995. In 1996 the Gators exploded in the first half...I think it was 31-6 at the half or something of that nature.
The really interesting thing is SOS on that first drive. UT was playing an extra DB like Neb did in 95 against UF. It was the end of SOS’s O. UF ran the ball into the space voided by removing a LB for the extra DB. The 4th down play was run right into the spot the extra DB would have been in but UT had taken him out because SOS was running the ball. I was on the USS Tennessee SSBN 734 at the time. Our CO did the coin toss. The whole crew were UT fans. They were very unhappy with me after the game.
1996 was 35-29 Gators. We were up 35-6 at half and had to hold on at the end. One of those years when UT insisted they were the better team but unfortunately had lost the actual game.
35 - 7 at halftime baby! In Knoxville. I was in Georgia hunting and Freaking "Larry Munson" was calling the bulldogs game (yes I was listning) and he reported the score at halftime and I will never forget Munson said: 35 - 7? That can't be! Someone check that score. I was just - LOL LOL LOL I hated Munson ever since 1980.
Larry and his wife were members of the church I served for a while. Sometimes he would sneak up behind me, and whisper, “Run Lindsey, run!” All in fun. He also agreed to narrate a video of our church bowling league for our annual church conference. He did it like he was calling a uga game. (“…get the picture!”) He was actually a good guy. Please don’t misinterpret what I’m saying. I still hate uga with a deep passion; and I absolutely love it when they lose…in any sport. I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Larry, though.
Great story rev - thank you for sharing! And I don't (or didn't) hate Larry, obviously, he just rooted for the wrong team! Hope you gave Larry back as much as you took. You know the guy was not to happy to see SOS come around (LOL). He did have a rather interesting "voice", I wouldn't have traded him for Mick Huber in a milion years though! Oh and, (yes I know every Gator that ever lived was at the 1980 game) but I REALLY WAS! Ugh Here is what BURNED me about Larry - He was always referring to us Gators as: "Them People" - LOL It was always in good fun, back in the days when college football was fun, I am not so sure about that anymore. Anyway - Happy Memorial Day fellow Gator!
Yes, remember them with the ball and decent field position with minutes remaining only needing a “lucky” score to take the lead. Dis not work out for them. Good job D
I believe the Miami game is the key barometer going forward. It's a home game and imo a must win game to calm down any negative feelings from fans and press due to the last few years of ineptitude. Whichever team loses that game I believe the noise will be up the roof. Win this game and I believe the confidence level of this team will carry them to a winning season. Both teams imo knows what's at stake for this first game.
You're a better man than me. About the second time he whispered in my ear would be it. I USED TO HAVE a Cane friend that called me up to commiserate after Gator losses.
I agree, Florida has to win that first game, and keep the foot on the accelerator. Scoring points and a good record this fall will shut up the riff-raff!!!
me as well. Recall the play that the ball popped out of a Tenn player’s hands into ours and about 4 of our defenders ran together into the end zone for another TD. So good.
