The funniest explanation I've heard is that they cant get through the joke without getting mad and going off track. Everything ends up like: "A gay guy and a liberal walk into a bar ... god damn gays and libs, I hate 'em."

Norm McDonald was obviously a very highly regarded conservative comedian but seems to be an exception. I've wondered whether it's just a matter of my perspective/bias, whether conservatives are less likely to want to go into comedy, and/or other factors. The comedians I think have been the funniest while mocking the left/Democrats are themselves considered liberal - Bill Maher, Dave Chappelle, and Jon Stewart come to mind. Is that because they're just naturally funnier or because they're willing to pick on their own side a little bit? Dennis Miller is obviously talented but seemed to get less funny IMO as he got more partisan. I've listened to Gutfield a few times and am sincerely perplexed by his success.

I have to say that Trump is the funniest president I can remember hands down. I really dont know if its intentional or not sometimes. That part of the riff on Gettysburg where he was like "up the hill me boys" was killing me. The White House football hamburger feast had me in tears. I dont think he was doing a bit in those cases by any means. Maybe the secret for conservatives is to not try to "do" comedy, but "be" comedy. Trump isnt trying at all and has delivered more real laughs than a chump like Gutfield.

I guess Biden should have stocked the place with supporters like Trump did at Chic Fila and the bodega he went to recently.

Absolutely everything about Trump is fake except his poverty and racism.

A better idea would be to have a thread devoted exclusively to reporting on your idiotic posts, although it’s easier to just block you. Unfortunately, if we block you and your ilk, we might hardly notice the dumbing down of America.

Interesting thought. Norm is my all time favorite comedian. I never considered him ”conservative" although he certainly has some conservative humor. Norm liked to be the contrarian, so I think making fun of liberals at times played well. And in Hollywood circles making fun of liberals and getting a rise out of them would be his move. And I think going after the "elite" can be looked at like a conservative stance in humor, but I don't think he did it based on politics. He just seemed willing to make fun of anyone that deserved it as, long as it got a laugh. And he was very principled.

A lot of good comedy is also self deprecating, which I think ties in to your point.

is it any entertainment and not just in US but everywhere and for decades? Are artists in general, more liberal? Is being creative more associated with a mind that has more diverse thinking? And that’s just individual predisposition, once an entertainer gets into the biz early in life, the culture itself can be influential.

Good topic. Probably worthy of its own thread.

Yea I have a friend that loves the little nerd Gutfield. I don't get it, but maybe because I'm not a trumpster. Clearly Gutfield thinks he is funny.

I'm not a Maher/Stewart fan either tho they have their moments. Chapelle is pretty funny as long as you take off your PC glasses for a bit.

If one must be coarse, I wonder what you'll let Trump do a little higher.

Every form of entertainment is in the eye of the beholder. Do I laugh at Gutfield, yes sometimes, do I laugh at Maher, yes sometimes. Why is so important to feel like libs or cons are more of anything when it comes to entertainment? Just enjoy it, if works for you or move on to the next one that might. We have enough that the left and right can disagree on that are important issues and don't need to add which side is better at comedy/entertainment to divide us even further!!!

People mention Stewart, but for most of his peak run, he was the least funny guy on that show. Carrell, Colbert, Lewis Black, Larry Wilmore, etc I thought were the real laugh getters. Stewart was often playing straight with those guys, and thats a skill of its own. My hot take is that Craig Kilborn was the funniest Daily Show host.

I wasn't passing judgement, I think it's just an obvious observation that I'm curious about. I wish there was more good comedy period, whether it be from a right leaning or left leaning source. Comedy is in the eye of the beholder, but that doesn't mean there aren't underlying truths to what makes something inherently "funny" or not. Comedy is actually pretty formulaic at it's base. For ass unfunny as the Babylon bee usually is they do get a chuckle out of me every once in a while. I genuinely find it interesting the lack of widespread right wing comedy sources. There's plenty for them to make fun of

Craig Kilborn was definitely the funniest. Stewart was a quasi-sraight man, which is why I think you found the other guys funnier. He was the all-time assists leader, not the volume scorer.

I hadn't thought about Kilborn in a while. He basically fell off the earth after his late show

Maybe he made the best move of all the guys we are talking about. Chapelle, Stewart, Colbert, etc. they've all gotten older and less funny, a little more preachy and self-important. Kilborn walked away at the peak of his game and no one cares about his take on trans issues or civility.

Sorry if that came across rudely or claiming anything you weren't, that wasn't my intention. I do agree though when you say there is a lack of "comedy sources" from the right. It may be that the right leaning audiences that right leaning comics would need to play to, to become bigger names just do not exist. I love comedy, but politically based comedy is a fine line in my book, either left or right!

Unfortunately, we need to bring back bullying in school if we want to make comedy great again. There's no need for misfits, weirdos and nerds to develop a defense mechanism, and its killing our comedy. :)
