Jailer yes he's going to be good but we have a top 10 QB now with a better OL. HE won't complete 77% this year as he will throw deep a lot more. Mertz is more ready now.
Please do not mistake DJ for FF! Mediocrity is always paved on the platform of good intentions. Explain to me the new athleticism that you pinpointed in your observation of the Spring Game and Mertz? Correspondingly, what qualities did you observe that solidified the notion that a one dimensional Mertz is a substantial improvement over DJ? Who would you prefer to meet in a head to head collision? Why with specifics?
The most popular QB is always the backup QB. Besides Trask, I have never really seen the backup QB be the better choice. Let's hope the Coach makes the proper decision....

This is clearly Mertz's team and the only way DJ starts is through injury, but if that does happen, Mertz is unlikely to get his position back.
I'll try. DJ has great physical talent. No doubt. What he doesn't have is a lot experience against opponents who have nearly equal physical talent and are being coached by professional specialists. Most likely, they'll be able to bait and confuse him with things he's never seen before, and instinctively he'll resort to breaking the play - because that's always worked for him in the past. It might result in an exciting run now and then. But it will also reinforce the idea of doing everything himself instead of distributing the ball. Then, that habit will be even harder to break the next year - and could get him injured in the process. Be patient. Starting Mertz is exactly the right thing to do this year. I imagine that if you asked DJ, he'd sincerely say the exact same thing. BTW: the saying is TOE the line. It comes from the required starting position of bare-knuckle boxers, way back when.
So, you completely omit that Mertz was going against the 1st team D, where as DJ was going against the 2's? Oh the irony of "crafted narrative." Mertz has earned the benefit of the doubt until he shows incapable.
