Okay, Gator Nation, I did not watch the game, as I had other commitments. Who impressed you? Who were the surprises? Any disappointments? Who are the players you feel will definitely play a lot of football for the Gators in the fall? Positions that are a strength of the team? Portal transfer help that the Gators still are needing?
I liked what I saw from the D a lot. Lagway would have kept the O going if they weren't playing touch with him. Mertz had a good game.
You can't read too much into a Spring Game. More fun than anything. Montrell looks odd in the #1 Jersey instead of #2 Kicker Hunter Smith had a bad day though ouch
Biggest surprise of the game was the freshman RB Baugh. Great vision, jump cut and burst through the hole. Much improved from last year. Lagway is as advertised. Mertz was Mertz, and that is a good thing. Better tackling as well.
I think the WRs may be improved....and it sounded like the OL at times was giving both quarterbacks more time so there were some deeper balls thrown
Granted, I only watched 12:48 of YouTube highlights, but it seemed like the QB’s were under constant pressure and having to throw off stride or on the run.
Personally, I did not see anything that moved the needle much. We are what Napier wants us to be. We shall see what that means during the real season and games. I am hopeful.
I can imagine he is going to be a load to bring down! Do you think he will get playing time this fall?
I really think each event needs two threads New guys really poppin at the OnB game! vs New guys creating separation, too bad they will never see the field together Just sippin bourbon on the Tuck vs sitting on a Tucks Go Gators!
I'll bite. 1. Lagway is the real deal. I wasn't really doubting the hype, but now that I've seen him play in real time, I'm a true believer. Mertz is the clear starter, but DJ has a grasp of the game as a FR, at an instinctual level, that a player either possesses or he doesn't. DJ Lagway has it in spades. I also liked the bump in the downfield passing game - particularly by Mertz. He tossed a couple of rainbows that you'll no doubt see on the highlights. 2. I saw somewhat better pass protection in the first half than what we've been getting lately, unfortunately the second half not so much. Run blocking didn't stand out one way or another for me. 3. The FR RBs look promising, Baugh in particular. 4. Defensively, the secondary "looks" better in every respect, athletically and in terms of being where they were supposed to be and making a play when they got there. The passes batted down and the interceptions were a net positive in my view. 5. We still look vulnerable on the ground up the middle, but we actually seemed to have some guys in position on the edges and the tackling appears to be improved all around. 6. EW is better than last year and AM is rounding into an actual WR very nicely. Dike and Jackson were solid. 7. I'd trade the 2nd string PK for a cement garden gnome and feel good about it.
I agree on 1–6 lizard but I wouldn’t give up on Hunter just yet. He had a bad day but I’m not so sure he can’t be a good kicker for us if needed. Time will tell. I too am excited about Lagway. He looks like he’s the complete package and playing behind a veteran like Mertz for a year is going to make him even better.
Still too early, but with Daniels coming in more highly touted, I thought Baugh outplayed him significantly.
Unless you are a Gainesville lad named Hunter Smith or friends/family and read this very hurtful comment.
