No idea. But, 2X in just a few hours means someone is trying to leverage race to get something.

why not “ are you afraid of having an honest conversation?” “Let’s talk, man” or even “why can’t we get along?” No - the defining premise of both initiatives was skin color.

It's definitely this. Black people nowadays are allowed to "leverage race", while poor white people are not allowed to.

    It's very unfair.

The last time I was in NYC I had this exact thing happen to me. I didn't engage, just gave him a dirty look and kept walking. My GF was with me, didn't think she would appreciate me engaging.

    Straw men comments abound.

Nowhere did I lament I was a victim. I stated an incident and said it was especially noteworthy due to hearing the 2nd equivalent comment from another black man to another person.

My son has lived in Harlem and now Brooklyn and said he’s never heard that before.

I am thinking if this actually happened. The guys have learned that saying something like that will guilt some people into giving them money or cause others to initiate a screaming match. In the chaos whatever the guys wanted might have been easier.

Are you serious? You believe you're gonna have a rational conversation with Joe crackhead (or just about any other random stranger) downtown Manhattan? Give the race thing up. This is more likely about poverty and drug addiction in big cities. The only thing being leveraged was your attention. You can't turn this into any meaningful race conversation here or on the streets of Manhattan. It doesn't work that way.

To add: Thanks for your reply.

The young man that approached me was lucid, very clear and aware (“I’ll tear you up and don’t care about the cops because I’ll be back here tomorrow…”) He didn’t come across as mentally ill nor on drugs. He was working/selling something and did not like my response to his offer.

Reminds me of my poor old daddy when I was a kid. He told me about some favor he did for a black man, I forget what. In gratitude the black man held out his hand for a handshake. My daddy said, "I shook his hand before I realized what I was doing."

Now if that guy in NYC had come up to me and said, "Show me you're okay shaking hands with a black man," I would have freaked out. I would have to ask him, "How do you know about my daddy?"

Definitely a hustle of some type on tourists. Sounds super obnoxious.

Semi related I once had a homeless mentally ill person yell at me out of absolutely nowhere "go home and jerk of your mom." For once in my life I was speechless.

Thought it was an interesting incident X2 because of the second similar approach. You must as well as you’ve made several comments. Are you not entertained?

Wow. You are prescient. I don’t have Cable news but somehow I downloaded the Fox talking points from 2005 and they stuck with me. I’m a talking point ninja:ninja3:

You can either “Yes, and” the thread and offer something of value or accuse me of lying If you think I’m lying I don’t know why you would want to continue to engage.

My apology. I hope the emotional scarring from this episode begins to heal and that my cruelty suggesting he brought on the offending handshake offer by looking like a tourist be forgiven.

I'd be caught off guard by someone doing that too. I don't think immediately going to "F you" was a good move though. I'd probably end up staring awkwardly and then walk away while apologizing.

It definitely sounds like a hustle of some kind but I’m genuinely curious how that works. What’s the end game here? You give him a wad of cash because you have guilt about not shaking his hand? lol. That can’t work very well right?

OP - how was Book of Mormon for you? I’ve seen it 3 times. So damn hilarious.
