Former Gator QB, Jacoby Brissett, signs nice year contract with Patriots for 8-12 mill

    Jacoby Brissett, QB
    The Patriots plan to sign Brissett to a one year and $8 million contract with a maximum value of $12 million.

    What it means: Brissett returns to the team that selected him in the third round of the 2016 draft, and represents a veteran "bridge" option should the Patriots draft a quarterback with the third overall pick and decide not to play him right away. Brissett was viewed as a positive veteran influence on Washington second-year quarterback Sam Howelllast season, and then when called upon to play late in the season, he showed he could still be effective.

    Brissett's background with first-year Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt -- having started 11 games in Cleveland in 2022 when Van Pelt was the quarterbacks coach -- was a link that had many predicting he would ultimately land in New England this year.

    What's the risk: Minimal. The one-year term puts more of a strain on the salary cap than a multi-year deal would have, but the Patriots have plenty of space to work with.

    Interesting to see former Gator QBs with greatest NFL success and longevity. JB may have the longest run and he had to transfer colleges to start. Wonder what former UF QB has the greatest NFL stats. John Reaves may if you counted USFL stats but not based on NFL resume. Grossman? JB? Rex and JB have around 10,000 NFL passing yards. Perhaps Rex as led a team to play in the Super Bowl one year. Shane had a nice NFL career as a backup, as did Driskel. Our 3 Heisman QBs were considered busts in NFL comparatively. Jessie Palmer may have the greatest post career success with Bachelor, TV commercials and NFL broadcast career.

    Spurrier wasn't a bust. With no free agency, he was trapped in San Francisco as an insurance policy for John Brodie.

    Plus his unfortunate stint as a coach in the NFL, unless he was held back from doing his thing which is questionable since they let him get Danny. I was so excited to watch the NFL to see Spurrier and Danny again.

    10 years in the NFL. 9 with 49ers and 1 with the expansion Bucs. You would not expect a Heisman QB to throw for 40 TDs and 60 interceptions in their NFL career. Not a bust in terms of longevity but did not play like a first rounder (3rd overall pick) and Heisman winner. Interesting stat is Spurrier was the primary Punter for the 49ers for 3 years

    I can’t believe I didn’t know that but I knew he kicked the ‘66 winning? field goal for the Gators.

    And then had to play on the worst team in NFL history with no OL. He was smart to retire when he did, otherwise he might have gotten killed.

    He played the majority of the year in 1972 when Brodie was injured and helped get the 9'ers into the playoffs. Brodie returned later in the year as the starter and they lost in the 1st rd of the playoffs to the Cowboys. It was a different era....I'm not saying that Spurrier was superior to Brodie as a QB, but at that time a starter was automatically reinstated upon return from injury.

    Then there's Trask who probably will never play a down. TB just signed a new QB behind Mayfield.

    What do you get from that, he was good in college but not developing at TB? They don't seem to want to trade him, but apparently don't see enough in him to let him play.

    What about Cliff Stoudt who had 2 Super Bowl rings before he ever took an NFL snap as a back up to Terry Bradshaw in the late 1970’s.
