And occasionally a freshman comes in and surprises, as Tre Wilson did. Also, I think Tebow was exceptional as a sophomore (obviously to win the heisman), but really showed his stuff the next two years.
UF was 11th (out of 16) in points per game scored if you include Texas and okie. That is actually not very good when looking at our peers in the conference. while special teams and defense are priority, the offense is bottom half of the conference which is not near good enough even with improved defense and special teams.
Perhaps the reason why our offense is bottom half in points scored is largely because the defense doesn’t cause many turnovers and allows numerous time-consuming drives. Having said that, no doubt the offense has plenty of room for improvement. Starts with the OL.
year 4 ... or 5? this counts as otherworldly optimism at this point listening to Chuck Oliver's show today, the only UF talk was that Billy wouldn't make it past this year. it passed as fact, nobody challenged this idea (even Heath Kline, who is the showrunner and used to host a local sports radio show here a while back) they were lamenting how we used to be a marquee name and now we are only mentioned as a Hot Seat holder - much like these boards. guess it's all our fault
none of the sentences in your first paragraph make sense together. "If everyone on staff AND the team would execute really well everything would run smoother. Napier would look smarter." ridiculous thing to say, prima facie. "If 'ifs' and 'buts' were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas" - let's try to stick to reality. what actually happened, happened. BN finished 5-7. "The reason Napier has too much on his plate is because of too many F ups. Especially defense." Napier hires the defensive staff. Napier put a chunky child in charge of the defense, and then fired his two most experienced college recruiters (defensive position coaches) the day the season ended. obviously BN thinks those folks were the problem, and the reality of that actual situation will begin in 6 months. your next two paragraphs are saying the same thing. "Second year is supposed to be smoother but for many reasons we'll documented, and many probably not, it wasn't. First year was year zero, 2nd year was year one, this year got to get shit straight, regardless of the schedule and record." that's a lot of words. his first year was his first year, we cannot erase or excuse it. so far, it was his best year - let's not be too quick to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Year 2 is Year 1, OK: Arky loss 100% on BN, Mizzou loss got 4th & 31 stench, FSU loss was entirely on player composure - 5 losses to end the year and spiral us out of a bowl opportunity. Year 1/2 absolute disaster. taking your argument at face value - "The reason Napier has too much on his plate is because of too many F ups" the reason Napier has too much on his plate is ....... NAPIER! BN refuses to hire offensive or ST help. WHY? Honest Question - WHY?
You listen to the chuck show; that explains a lot- I listen to Chris Doering. He's the Gator great that stated the Gators have the worst fans in college football. He must know you.
LOL... Typical See, it's been "linked" and talked about in and around a hundred (100) times on the Gator Country Boards. So, I didn't intend to link it. However, you made me realize google is too dificult for posters like you. I will link it. Chris Doering has critical take of Florida Gators fans
It seems like head coaches are putting staffs together and then having significant turnover. Kelly at LSU and Freeze at Auburn lot of staff turnover. Billy has had turnover of his DL, LB, DC, secondary coaches on D. Only Mike Peterson from original staff. 2nd coach going into year 3 requires players to adjust rather grow in system. On Offense, TE and WR already on 2nd coach. Only HC, two OL coaches, RB coach and Mike Pete remain from original staff going into year 3. Will not win that way
Are you referring to just the original defensive coaches? Cuz on offense Sale, Juluke, and Stapleton are all still on staff.
The thing was champ hired roper but then never allowed him to do anything but what champ wanted. Napier if he hires an offensive coordinator will need to let him run the offense.
Argument is flawed. You can’t fault him for his mistakes and then fault him for making changes because of these mistakes. It’s a work in progress as it is for all coaches and his past success gives us hope that he can figure it out in this new era of college football. Time will tell, but if you’re gonna criticize, at least make it constructive.
Guess I’m gonna throw out this and hope it is constructive. BN has hired people he is familiar with or those that fit his theory of football (ie, 2 OL coaches, no special teams coach, he is OC and a VERY young DC). I often go back to Spurrier. When he came into the SEC and was asked about his punter, he said “we don’t plan to punt much.” He later hired stoops as DC and we all know what happened. You MUST bring in talent that will take over responsibilities and do them well even if it is different from what you would do. BN to date seems to like “program guys” who will carry out his vision without the ability to build their unit to the best of its ability. Maybe that is not “complementary football” but it can be winning football. My criticism to date is that BN seems to believe he has all the answers, but great teams are built on larger talent aggregations. I hope BN can hire exceptional talent and let them bloom. Right now it seems as if he is hiring guys who buy in to his vision rather than hiring folks to bring their vision. As an aside, I like the Armstrong hire. He is young but I think extremely talented and I am guessing that the 2 defensive assts. fired after the season were a long time coming. I support BN if he sees Armstrong as a great DC in the making, is willing to suffer as he learns (he is soooo young), and acknowledges that he could go down with him. The issues I see have more to do with S&C coach (he changed, thankfully), special teams, and generally him being higher level so game adjustments occur fluidly among staff rather than in a restricted path thru him.
