Charles Kelly is a terrible DC, he has been since working for Jimbo at FSU. Auburn’s defense is taking a big step backwards if he’s their guy next season.

I get it, I want it to work like everyone else, I'm just thinking out loud.
Which one has the final say on defensive decisions if there is a disagreement between the two? The EHC of D/co DC/LB coach or DC?

I'm thinking it's the guy with EHC in his title.

I hope he learned from the Bama loss not to let a QB have all day to complete a last play of the game miracle.

Could the executive HC of D be positioned to relieve some administrative duties from a slightly overwhelmed HC and a young, up and coming DC?

I think all of the defensive staff hires are good. Still would like a safety coach but that's not going to happen I think.

I'm sure this was all discussed with AA & he/RR understand how it'll all work. Seems to be a great hire.

Was curious why he’d want to go from DC to position coach. Thanks to y’all with the college knowledge on him.

His defense had his team in position to win that game. What do you think our defense would have given up to Bama? They'd be kneeing it out on us with backups in.

At UF, he'll be an executive head coach, co-DC, and LB coach. He coached LB at Baylor from 2020-2022 and was also the DC. So it's nothing out of the blue for him.

You’re kidding, right? Did you even watch that game? That was rhetorical… This is a great hire. You and many others like you remind me of the old joke about the two male church members fishing with their new female pastor. One of them gets his hook caught in some brush. She gets out of the boat, and walks across the lake, walking on the water, to free his hook. He, though, turns to his fishing buddy and says, “See?! I told you she wasn’t any good. She can’t even swim.”

    https://247sports.com/college/flori...n-dc-ron-roberts-to-coaching-staff-224907031/

He was Napier's DC at Louisiana. They improved 87 spots when he arrived. He's going to call plays I'd bet.

One thing to note, I checked and Roberts left Louisiana for Baylor in 2020. AA was the LB coach for 1 year with Roberts and he went to southern miss as DC/lb in 2020 when Roberts left.

Napier hired Toney to replace roberts as DC and then brought Toney with him to here. Roberts was hired by Auburn in Dec, 2022. Toney didn't leave us until Feb 2023. We then hired AA.

I think most thought the hiring of AA was a bit odd given his experience. So, it crossed my mind that he was a 1 year stop gap and there was a plan in place for Roberts to come here following this past season. Now I know it is unlikely and that it just happenstance that Roberts just didn't like freeze. But giving him the EHC title probably allowed Roberts an out to his contract.

I think it is more likely that Napier simply decided substantial change had to happen on the D side and that AA wasn't up to it .

    Just spit balling.
