They could try, I guess, but what would be the reason that ESPN would do this? They are already under contract until 2036.
respectfully, I don’t believe UNC or UVA add to the SEC. Average (at best) football. Smaller stadiums
1 is not like the other. If you want to compare UVA to an SEC school, think Vandy. UNC on the other hand has proven that it will cheat like hell to have a winner (on the court at least) and has a national following in Basketball. They will fit right in with the SEC like a hand in a glove (and I don't mean OJ).
With more and more people cutting the cord, ESPN'S profits have been dropping every quarter. With the new SEC deal, ESPN will be paying more for college sports content. ESPN has ACC sports on the cheap under contract for another dozen years. No way ESPN doesn't fight to keep the ACC and FSU on that contract.
From your lips to God’s ears. I can pray!! “Wes Chandler was Percy Harvin before Percy Harvin was born.”
I would love to add unc and UVa, but they believe (maybe rightfully so) that they fit better in the B1G. That said, if the acc crumbles, the SEC should do their best to get either unc/UVa or NC State/VT. NC State/VT fit the football focus of the SEC better, but neither is the flagship university of their state.
If a judge rules against in favor of FSU then it will set a legal precedent that other ACC schools will exploit.
we need pUKe to return to their normal state of mediocrity for our guaranteed win. we don’t need them to be top tier football programs
Personally I suspect realignment will be the next great change to what some of us call college football and others, myself included, think of as an unregulated semi professional system, that will ultimately divest itself of any academic requirements, Even attending class. I strongly believe that the number of Power 5 teams will be reduced significantly, I'm thinking something along the lines of 48 programs, maybe even 36. The others will be reclassified due to lack of resources or qualifications. I also think we may be headed toward 2 entities, what we now call conferences, and the alignment will be something like the NFC and AFC with several divisions At least that's what it looks like from my lens.
Why would FSU go to the Big 12? The Big 12 media rights deal pays much less than the ACC on a per school annual basis.
But that changes with additions. If Big12 added FSU and Clemson they may be able to renegotiate a deal which would offer a larger buyout. It’s not going to be B1G or SEC level but still an increase. The SEC deal was genius, by adding Texas and Oklahoma it forced ESPN to pay them more. I don’t know if the Big12 has a similar set up but adding the two ACC teams definitely increases their brand and wrecks the ACC.
The Big 12 is already 18 schools deep, so any bump FSU generates gets spread across all those schools and so relatively less comes back to FSU. But I was wrong above, the new Big 12 deal does pay more out per school than the current ACC contract so there is some logic in FSU going there. But if it costs FSU $100+ million to break out of the ACC to go to the Big 12 for a marginally larger conference payout per year, I don't think it nets them much if anything.
I don’t disagree. I think if FSU gets out of the ACC the Big12 makes the most logical sense. I don’t think they bring enough value to the B1G or SEC and they won’t be able to operate independently. At this point the Big12 is trying to stay relevant with everyone’s left overs. FSU would be the biggest fish for them and might be FSU’s only real option.
Rumor: Pitt, Virginia Tech, Louisville, NC State all can join Big 12 soon after Brett Yormark expansion push Rumor: Pitt, Virginia Tech, Louisville, NC State all can join Big 12 soon after Brett Yormark expansion push
FSU, Clemson, OK State, K-State, and Texas Tech may join SEC, with KU, Notre Dame, UNC, and UVA joining Big Ten FSU, Clemson, OK State, K-State, and Texas Tech may join SEC, with KU, Notre Dame, UNC, and UVA joining Big Ten
Why do all of these made up scenarios always have the SEC taking on a giant pile of garbage? Texas Tech? Kansas State? this isn't the sun belt.
FSU will clearly end up in either the B1G or SEC. Which I don't know. It does seem like a friendly arms race/Cold War between the two has been emerging. There aren't too many impact names still out there. Football is what is driving all this so IMO, Notre Dame, FSU and Clemson are the 3 biggest fish out there. I suppose one could throw UNC in there too because of their basketball and general name recognition. The AAU thing is overplayed for a few reasons. First, Notre Dame just got into the AAU and the B1G had been trying to add them for decades. Second, Nebraska was but no longer is and they're still in the B1G. It's either a requirement or it isn't. Third, it's no longer the conferences calling the shots. It's the networks. They're the ones cutting the checks. The B1G appears to be bent on making their conference as nationwide as possible which I am not really a fan of but whatever. I don't believe FSU would be going thru all this if there wasn't, at minimum, some kind of nudge, nudge, wink, wink in terms of a landing spot. I would think the SEC is FSU's preference but if not I am sure the B1G would be more than happy to take them. If the SEC does not want FSU I can't see why they'd want Clemson either. I could see UNC going either way. Throw in one more like Miami or UVA or Va Tech and that's a nice little southern pocket for the expanded B1G.
Plus I think they would rather have shorter road trips instead of going out to Oregon and Minnesota. Cheaper to bring their band that way. I don't think there is any way to keep the big 10 out of the south even if the SEC wanted to. Too many teams and the SEC can't take them all. If I had my first choice, I would take UNC and UVA right off the bat. Football is better than Vandy UNC is KY or better. Good in Basketball. Second choice would be FSU and Clempson. I could be talked into NC State and Georgia Tech (they used to be in the SEC anyway).
