Yeah, there will be guys leaving that probably end their career/graduate. And the portal was full of guys last year that didn't find new scholarships elsewhere. Look at Mugharbil leaving UF for Colorado, then getting cut and having to walkon elsewhere.
With NIL and the portal, college football as we know is over. If they really relaxed the portal, you would see dominance of 10 teams every year, the same 10 teams playing for the CFP. Players would look at Vegas odds and determine which team has the best chance of winning the CFP and transfer there. They'll spend a year at their school choice and if they earned honors, they would then shop themselves to the highest bidder. No other team would ever see the CFP, just those 10 to 12 teams (with arguably the same 8 vying for the CFP every year). That is if they were to open up the portal completely - no limit to how many times you can transfer. But the way the portal is setup now, the next dynasty will be the program that best uses the portal - I could see a future Saban building a championship team every year from just the portal with supplementation from recruiting.
So you mean the status quo. Look at the past 25 years, it has been the same 8-10 teams vying for a title. Be it CFP, BCS or what came before. Edit- 15 teams have won the NC since 1990. https://www.si.com/fannation/colleg...otball-national-championship-teams-since-1869
Yep, that is my point exactly. Not sure I can think of anyone who should leave early, but, there are always one or two that leave too early (or never should have left at all but are not suited for school.)
Some good thoughts in this. Hopefully we don't lose Webb at RB, because he's a good #3. I doubt ETN will leave. He's become a mainstay here, and he's doing NIL work in Florida with his brother in Jax. I can definitely see Mihalek leaving because Smack is entrenched now (is he on scholarship though?). Maybe Brown will leave, but, he is playing baseball here, too. Hopefully Mertz will come back and work Lagway into the fold. We have no other scholarship QBs other than Miller, who has proven fragile and ineffective.
Brown partially practices with the baseball team, he has never played in a game. And another poster pointed out that his BB position is loaded, so most likely never see the field in a game.
I'd be surprised if Metz leaves. he's having fun and getting paid. Him and Etienne, Sapp,Wilson and a few others are leading the rebuild and are the keys to our future. The class coming in is solid concrete.
Mertz isn't going anywhere. He is a day 3 QB right now. Would need a Trask like year to get into day 2.
It wouldn't surprise me if the staff encouraged Watson to look for options. As much as we like big dez, he's seeing less and less of the snaps. This is his 3rd year and wt is still a problem. Course, our luck would be he finally does lose the weight and becomes an unholy terror in the middle for some other team.
Entirely possible but don’t think it would work with mostly portal. NCAA needs to limit free portal movement to one time only then you have to sit a year. One very important question I have is if you transfer and pay your own way in to school (no ship involved) can the NCAA still make you sit out? You are basically a walk on.
Maybe he should take a year off and redshirt, just to get to a healthier weight. No reason to continue to play 4 plays a game.
This is the current rule, one transfer. Second transfer(unless its a grad transfer) sits one year without a waiver. Ex: Miller transferred to us and had immediate eligibility. If he transfers again, he would have to sit out a year unless he drops to FCS. Looked up Miller, if he kept his class schedule up, he should be graduating. Which means he can grad transfer and not have to sit out.
