My honest take on our current situation. Offense The offense has shown significant improvement since the early weeks of the season. We are able to compete and with a better OL, we could be among the top offenses in the country. Lagway will help propel us up there if he is as hoped. Defense Well here is the bad news (obviously). Our defense has regressed significantly. We have raw talent but our guys do not look properly conditioned. The line is big and slow (like me). Unless we turn back the clock and play against 1970s offenses, they will get beat regularly. The LB crew lacks the talent of the rest of the defense, and seems poorly positioned on almost every play. They also leave at least one guy completely wide open on 33-40% of the plays (to my untrained eye this may be due to poor schematics/coaching rather than talent). The DBs are often out of position, and when in position, are beat constantly. Although many are young, the older ones are beat just as often (may be more). This may be conditioning, coaching, or some combination (more likely). Our youth is a factor, but I don't care how young you are, you cannot ever let up 700 yards in one game. As with every coach since Meyer, Napier's fate will depend upon whether he can recognize that changes need to be made on the defensive side of the coaching staff. If he makes those changes, he has the potential to become a top coach. If he value loyalty over performance, he will go the same road as Muschamp, Mcelwain, and Mullen, who could never fire a staff member until it was far too late. Let's hope for the best. Go Gators!
The offense has progressed, but we still need an experienced OC with the freedom to run his own system. Napier continues to fail with regards to situational playcalling (see the 3 runs down 10 last night), personnel use (Pearsall and EW3 disappear late in games), 2 minute offense, tempo, use of timeouts, and everything that is Football 101. I’m afraid the play of the offense the past 2 weeks will encourage Napier to continue calling plays and be too distracted by that to address special teams, motivating the team, and all HC/CEO duties. Big changes are needed.
Offense is NOT the problem. We scored 35 points with a defense that let LSU run up and down the field. Our problem is so obviously D that I can't believe people still whine about our offense
Agree with the terrible lb play. Some of them don't belong on a div1 D. LSU rushed for 329 and our 2 main LBs played 90% of the snaps, totaling 3 solo tackles and 6 assists. Easy to see how LSU set some records against us. 17 had 1 solo tackle, seeming to be out of position on a majority of plays.
What are you even trying to argue right now? Anyone with working eyeballs can see the defense is poor and the OL is subpar but we're doing alright on offense in spite of it.
Agreed thru 10 games all below are per offensive game averages, ncaa rank, sec rank Points 29.5 56th 7th Rush 138.7 89th 10th Pass 278.6 26th 6th Total 417.3 46th 6th Middle of the pack without much (hell any help from defense with turnovers). Did I mention we have a suspect OL especially at OT? Hardly, the main reason for our current record.
This question raises my two biggest concerns with BN. 1 - Last year our team did not get better thru the year. We limped into the off season on a losing streak. I could suffer thru some loses this year given our schedule, but that Arky loss was just ugly, and it appears, again, that the team is really no better in the last game than the first (some units are better, some worse, but the team is no better). 2 - BN talks of complementary football but that is the last thing we play. If the D looks good, the offense is in a shell. If the offense is firing, the defense lays an egg. Special teams is at least steady - unfortunately, steady means consistently a risk of failure. For 2 years we have watched BN play whack a mole. Make progress here but lose b/c of there, with little to show at the end. BN is not going anywhere this year but he needs to fix his “system” to prevent variable failures and create consistent progress (as he talks about) or next year will be very precarious. Coaches cannot make average players great, but they can make average players ann above average team thru discipline, technique, and effort. Giving up 700+ yards is just a joke that must include not caring at some level by some folks in the chain. Not expecting championships, but consistent progress - and that is not showing on the field.
Our poor OL play and defensive woes certainly predate CBN. The question then becomes what has he done to correct them and were those efforts successful. Recruiting, Portal and assistants oh my
This was posted to FB by Brandon Spikes: @coach_bnapier has done a lot right. More than our fans give him credit for. He’s a supreme talent evaluator. Best players we have are ones he brought in. Given time he will build this program back to the glory days and remember Rome wasn’t built in a day !! #GoGators As I've posted elsewhere, Florida is MUCH closer to turning a corner than it may appear to many. If you knew some of the things I can't post you wouldn't despair as much. I'd like to keep this thread from turning into bashing please. Thanks!
I have suspected this much and now it has been confirmed by a reliable source. I hope he sends that to the current recruits (if that is okay) and they all heed his words.
Brandon Spikes is the man!! I would believe what he says more so than most people affiliated with our program. Patience is required by all of us. We need to let CBN fix this.. I would rather we support him even if it requires a few more years. I don't want to go back to 3 and out with our coaches. IMO, there is a very good chance we will get there.
It is all about winning and loosing. Can't get any worse than it is now so the future has to be better. Football team currently has a worse winning percentage than any of the other 18 Florida athletic teams. Never thought I would see that happen.
We need Spikes back in some fashion, analyst of motivation? Be fun to see Tebow and Spikes roaming the sidelines pumping the team up! I know I know wouldn't happen but one can dream.
