Tyrell Phillips, 22, was arrested and charged with 2 counts of second-degree murder with respect to an early Sunday morning altercation in Ybor City. Dead are a 14 and 20 year old. Phillips is currently being held without bond and the SAO has filed a motion to detain him without bond until trial. There were at least two shooters, possibly more. Details are sketchcy, but it looks like an altercation between 2 groups got completely out of hand. The only Hillsborough County priors I saw for him are a DUI/Cannabis charge in 2020.
SMH 14 year old out at a party in Ybor at 3am. Loses his life over an argument or someone being disrespected. Why? It’s senseless violence. When did we start teaching that life has no value? No meaning. Sad day.
In this country we've been teaching that life, or at least certain lives, have no value for a long time.
They had him in one of those tunics that looks like it is made from mover's blankets at first appearance court this morning. That usually means he is in the suicide watch ward.
No, if you are going to make a statement like that you need to be ready to back it up. Don't dance around it.
I see pick up trucks all the time with stickers that say “an armed society is a polite society”…. Sounds like that’s what they are teaching…. Don’t be rude to a guy with a gun…
On the rare occasion I go to Ybor I am out by 10. They keep trying to build housing in the area and it’s understandable why if fails. Gas Worx project is going to need a plan for this
I agree with you. I can’t fathom letting my 13/14/15 year old out on the streets of ybor at a party in ybor at 3am. Nothing good can come of that .Nothing good did.
My wife and I lived there about 12 years ago, and we actually thought it was awesome. We were expecting it to be a bit rough, but we never once had a problem. And we were out late frequently. That said, it’s always a good idea to be aware of your surroundings. This night came to a tragic end that perhaps could have been avoided.
Downtown Orlando on the weekend after dark doesn’t appeal to me either. Had some idiot in a limo park in front of a parking lot exit and we were all trying to get out. All he had to do was move 6 feet forward; but, no he had us blocked and he was the shit. Guys running in front of cars, every other word is F*** you and then some. A real paradise. Ripe for some testosterone laden punk to be “disrespected” and prove himself. I stay far, far away. RIP to those in Tampa
What a sad and totally foreign world (to me, at least) some people live in. The 14-year-old who died was out at 3 am ... with a gun of his own. Ybor City shooting suspect said he feared for his safety, records show
He is a murderer but his statements would be enough to defend him and avoid charges is he had a badge and conviction if the was SYG type that looked differently According to the motion and an arrest affidavit, Phillips told police that he got in a confrontation with another group of people and that he opened fire because a man in the group reached for his waistband. But the person Phillips fatally shot did not appear to reach for or pull a gun before Phillips opened fire, according to video reviewed by police. Phillips told police he feared for his safety when he fired about two rounds at the men, without specifically targeting any of them. Police later found three spent 10mm shell casings at the scene near Wilson’s body. The motion states that he “was found to have a loaded firearm concealed at his waistline, but the firearm was still still fully encased inside its holster.”
Do you really think that's a fair equivalence? And by asking that I'm by no means exonerating police from every shooting. I have a big problem with many aspects of policing but context matters. Also curious how the conclusion was made that the other kid wasn't reaching for his gun since it was still holstered.
Maybe not the actual event but the language used. The invocation that he was in "fear for his life" because the other guy supposedly moved his hand towards his waistband. That "defense" of a shooting sounds very much like police statements or stand your ground proceedings.
Agree with that but I can't separate the context of how the situation led to that to begun with. 14 year old out with a gun at 3am. Multiple young people carrying. Reaching for said gun. Was it brandished prior to the shooting at any time so that everyone was aware guns were present? Threats made? Etc etc On another note, I doubt I would have survived my teen years and early twenties if I experienced them now. I was pretty hot headed and somewhat fearless even if unjustifiably so. I got into many scraps and sometimes with more than one person. Today I would likely be shot as much as I ran my mouth back then. We had some gang kids back then but I was naive and never felt any concern about a gun getting pulled.
