GOP gonna try to push Jim Jordan over the line. Jim Jordan Wins Internal GOP Election, But Faces Uphill Climb To Take Speaker's Gavel
There are 18 Republican House members representing districts won by Joe Biden in 2020. Although just a guess I suspect that very few of those members will be voting to elect "Gym" Jordan as the next Speaker of the House.
Jordan can only lose five Republican votes, and there are already three who have said they won't vote for him. Mike Rogers will not back Jim Jordan for Speaker of the House, would work with Democrats - al.com U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) said, “there was nothing that Jordan could do to get his support as Speaker of the House,” as reported in the Anniston Star. Rogers left a closed-door caucus session Friday and said Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries (R-NY) should state concessions needed to help the GOP. “They put us in this ditch along with eight traitors,” Rogers told Capitol Hill reporters. “We’re still the majority party, we’re willing to work with them but they gotta tell us what they need.” Rogers has voiced his anger at the eight Republicans who helped oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, calling them “traitors” who “paralyzed” the House, according to a report.
Jordan Activates Right-Wing Campaign in Push to Win Speakership - The New York Times (nytimes.com) Representative Jim Jordan and his allies have begun a right-wing pressure campaign against Republicans opposed to electing him speaker, working to unleash the rage of the party’s base voters against any lawmaker standing in the way of his election. Even after Mr. Jordan, the hard-right Ohio Republican, won his party’s nomination for the post on Friday, he remained far short of the 217 votes he needed to win the gavel, with scores of his colleagues refusing to back him. In efforts to close the gap, lawmakers and activists close to him have taken to social media and the airwaves to blast the Republicans they believe are blocking his path to victory and encourage voters to browbeat them into supporting Mr. Jordan. It is an extraordinary instance of Republican-on-Republican fighting that underscores the divisions that have wrought chaos inside the party, paralyzing the House of Representatives in the process. Several of Mr. Jordan’s supporters have posted the phone numbers of mainstream G.O.P. lawmakers they count as holdouts, encouraging followers to flood the Capitol switchboard with calls demanding they back Mr. Jordan — or face the wrath of conservative voters as they gear up for primary season.
The stunt by Matt Gaetz vacating the chair and removing Kevin McCarthy from the Speakership of the House could be a prime example of being careful what you wish for. Matt Gaetz might have handed Democrats a huge win If you don't want bother clicking on the link and reading that article, it's essence is that a coalition of Democrats and rational Republicans could end up electing a relatively moderate Republican as the next speaker.
Reports there are 40 "no" votes for Jordan and 20 of those are pretty solid "no" votes. But who knows, McCarthy made all kinds of deals to get votes, including allowing Gaetz the opportunity to single handedly unseat him, so may Gym can still win. I don’t normally agree with republicans but the fact that they don’t think any current republicans are qualified to lead is very relatable.
optimistic...cautiously optimistic...time for the middle to tell both ends to f' off. ‘Informal’ House Speaker Talks Underway With GOP, Jeffries Says (msn.com)
Ok so Gym Jordan has lost 2 votes, with the second having one more no vote than the first. At 20/21 no votes prospects are near zero for his appointment. So they decide to discuss giving the interim guy more power for the rest of the year but the extreme MAGA wing said no way and pulled out their pocket constitutions because making a deal with Democrats would be inexcusable. The 20+ no votes were pressured and threatened by various parties, including communication from Sean Hannity. The no votes are either more moderates, or people who formerly backed Scalise or McCarthy. The consensus is that if there are more votes going forward for Jordon the no votes will increase each time. Given all that, tomorrow they are going to do the only logical thing. Have one more vote for Gym Jordan. https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...m-speaker-patrick-mchenry-expansion-rejected/
Wouldn't both these come to the same conclusion though? Get the most moderate republican possible as speaker.
No. Party, make pubs look bad. Country, cut a deal with most moderate possible. First continues to happen, second, not yet
I don't think it's the Dems making the pubs look bad. And I haven't seen the Pubs offer anything of substance. Where's the negotiation been? They keep nominating MAGA types. If they started backing someone more reasonable I think your point stands
At this point I'd say any moderate R ( no idea who that could be) that Dems might support would ultimately by ostracized by the maga folks and quickly have a primary opponent. Seems like career suicide for most.
