This is college football not the NFL... we have NO "rookies" we have first year players, or freshman.
With Mertz doing great with his completion percentage numbers, does anyone know any grapevine rumblings if the NFL is warming up to him yet? I know a concern is that he PREVIOUSLY had a problem with a high number of picks, and this year he has'nt hit many deeper ball passes. I ask this because I'd like to see him come back one more year. I heard him say he, "Owes a lot to this University". Not faulting the kid at all if he chooses the NFL, if drafted/offered. Just would love to see some continuity as we go forward. Trask and the O were great, but we had Grantham with the D....... Hoping he stays and develops more in year two with all the offensive guys. GO GATORS!!!!
I think he is doing great, relatively speaking, this year. However I do not see any NFL future for him so he will be back next year to enjoy one more go. Him and Lagway will start like Leak and Tebow, but Lagway could perhaps pass him mid-year. At least having Mertz there will give the buffer to allow Lagway to get comfortable without immediate pressure.
