Are you saying the spark to do good is sufficient in and of itself, and that it doesn't matter whether it truly has a "divine" origin? I wouldn't disagree with that. Do good deeds. If one wants to also believe it ensures an afterlife, I can no more prove that it doesn't than one can prove it does. Personally, I think good deeds and generosity to others are their own rewards.

Maybe that spark to do good and the cumulative weight of all the acts of selfless good ever done over the ages constitutes God.
Hard to imagine a real and omnipotent being demanding us measly worms worship him. I hold the power of life and death over the ants in the ant hill but I don’t demand they worship me.

It's mind boggling that someone would refer to those of us who are concerned about climate change and man's degradation of the planet as members of a "cult". Those who follow the science are the opposite of cultists; those who do not are the true cultists

Hell, Exxon admitted they lied and misled in their climate denialism. There isn’t even actually a “debate” anymore as to whether this problem exists.

That anyone is clinging to the idea climate change is a hoax, is tantamount to the rape victim defending their rapist. Some strong brainwashing at work.

I agree with Tilly: existence is mysterious.... overwhelmingly so. I read a lot about science, but am no closer to understanding what it all means than when I first started seeking answers. I take it that it's easy for billions of people to conclude there must be a supreme being. It's impossible for me (though I've tried) because it raises more questions than it answers, the chief of which has been asked many times: what is the supreme being and how did it get here (wherever "here" is)? It's a "spirit" means nothing.

I imagine you won't trust the source, but Politifact clusters slightly left with high integrity of fact-based reporting.

You speak in allegories. I do good because I am a decent human being. My lack of belief in your imaginary friend has nothing to do with it.

I doubt yours is a serious inquiry, but nontheless here's an article:
What Is QAnon, the Viral Pro-Trump Conspiracy Theory?
Inasmuch as I doubt you have a subscription to the NYT, you can Google it by asking what is Qanon. If their "beliefs" don't make your hair stand on end you must not have any.

By the way, they have absolutely nothing to do with conservatism.

The climate changes over time and I don't think that is up for debate. The level man effects it is where the cult feeling is. We want to wreck our economy to take draconian steps to lesser man's effect not knowing if it will help while the biggest offenders continue to do what they have always done. America has cut emissions dramatically over the past 10 years, and it appears to have little effect, since most of the rest of the world continues doing what they have always done.
If this was such a dire situation. those that are preaching the most are taking the least number of steps toward green while trying to force the minions to cut back.
When the private jets get shut down, when the gas stoves are taken out of the mansions, when they are required to keep A/C above 79 degrees then you can say the cult leaders are leading by examples.

Your point is well taken. For years, many denied climate change. When the evidence to the contrary was obvious, it shifted to it's not contributed to by mankind’s economic activity. That has also been conclusively refuted by the evidence. So, as your post points out, the conversation now is where it should be: what do we do about it under the circumstances? Disruption of lives is obviously a serious issue, as is the fact that many nations aren’t doing their part.

I don’t have the answers. I will say this: The Homo sapiens species is an invasive one. We, all of us, have polluted and degraded the planet to the point that the survival of our species, at least in part, is threatened. (Over 99% of every species which has ever existed is now extinct. To think we’ll be spared that fate is folly.) Unless something happens to change the obvious trajectory caused by our economic activity, overwhelming disruption of life as we know it will ensue. I fear for my children and grandchildren.

My hope is that there will be a scientific breakthrough. That is what keeps me from concluding that life as we’ve known it is doomed.

I wonder if it could be, that since the magnetic poles are migrating from True North/South, if the geomagnetic field surrounding our planet has weakened, allowing more solar energy to enter the lower levels of the atmosphere.

To deny that the earth is in a warming period means you have joined the climate denier cult. To say it is more or less man's fault and we should transfer wealth from the citizen to the corporation to alleviate our guilt in the situation means you have joined the climate cult.

    Nuance is dead.

Thanks for the response and I appreciate what you are saying.
I will add though, that if over 99% of every species on earth has become extinct and it is a fate that Humans will be spared from is folly then why be so concerned? If you jump off a cliff, the landing is inevitable and the most unenjoyable part of the trip, the flight down though can be quite enlightening though!! lol. I'm in agriculture and know full well that we need to treat the land with due respect if we plan to continue to make a living off it. I say that to say that we need to treat our planet with all due respect but if as you say the landing is inevitable, taking these draconian steps will not make a difference and make the flight a whole lot less enjoyable!
I am being somewhat tongue in cheek.
