Former Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson explained in an interview that Trump stopped wearing masks during covid when the bronzer he applied stuck to them and left blank spots on his orange face.

So all the Trump rubes that refused to wear them because their orange king did thinking they were so brave were suckered again by the con man.

Ex-White House Aide Reveals Why Trump Wouldn't Wear A Mask During Pandemic.

Anyone who does or doesn’t wear a mask because of what a political figure does is a fool IMHO.

Ya might as well get medical advice from the guy at the health food store(they actually might know a little something).

I didn’t wear one either because I knew they were completely useless.

I think not smearing your spray tan projects strength just fine. Slightly less than not having a spray tan though. o_O

Oh about 8 years studying biology and biochemistry especially the part about the size of viruses and the kinds of masks that were being used. There are masks capable of stopping viruses but not the kind people wore not even the n-95. But let’s face it people are sheep and wanted to feel like they were doing something when they were not. Isolation works but it’s unsustainable.

I think we make the mistake of thinking of this issue in terms of all or nothing.

It's strange to me that people wearing masks are sheep who do it just to "feel like they were doing something. Wouldn't this be akin to saying people go to the dentist only bc they want to feel like they're doing something, as opposed to wanting to avoid problems with tooth decay?

Ok buddy this is physics and it’s not that hard. The virus particles are not being filtered with wearing panties on your face no matter how stylish you may think it makes you look. These particles are way too small. If you feel like there is some value in raising awareness then so be it but you’re fooling yourself thinking you are protecting yourself from an airborne virus with cheetah print masks.

Just point them to the Cochrane Review. It shows masks are useless.

I’m amused by a “doctor” (or is a “dentist”) talking physics. But anyhow…

Effectiveness of N95 Mask in Preventing COVID-19 Transmission

Herein, we devote special attention to compare the so-obtained efficiency of N95 masks to that of a recently designed two-layer cloth mask containing an intermediate High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter layer (Narayan et al. in Phys Fluids 34:061703, 2022). We conclusively show that the performance of the designed cloth mask is identical to that of a commercially available N95 mask. The assessment of mask effectiveness further includes examination of breathability and comfort by means of passage of air through them. A comparative study has been presented herein for a clear demonstration of effectiveness of different masks in preventing air-borne transmission of COVID-19.

In conclusion, we compare previous results on the performance of a two-layer cloth mask to that of a N95 mask in the context of mitigation of respiratory disease spread. It has been found that a HEPA filter insert into a two-layer cloth mask, promotes the performance of home-made cloth masks to the level of N95 masks. The elevated performance has been discussed in the light of inhibition of capillary imbibition due to hydrophobic interaction. The improved performance can also be attributed to a resistance in the penetration of respiratory fluid momentum due to the material’s geometric features.

I wore a mask when required to do so, but never felt confident that it would make any difference. The fact that many still wear masks even now is nuts. I was just at a supermarket and the majority of the staff were masked. Nuts.

Even more nuts are people walking around outside with masks on, even driving alone with them on!

Isn't it possible that mask wearing in the face of a deadly pandemic comes more from rational self-interest even if people suspect that they might not work or work well?

I get particle size. To be more specific, particle size is not the only factor that determines effectiveness (number of particles in the air, how people wear masks etc., mask design among others). So broadly claiming that they're completely useless doesn't make much sense to me even if it also seems to me that cloth & surgical masks in particular are much less effective. Problem is that studies on mask effectiveness are plagued by design & measurement precision issues, which is why confidence about findings tends to be extremely low.

I extensively studied microbiology and biochemistry too.
Masks are not designed to stop the flow of viruses, rather they are designed to stop the flow of aerosol droplets to which the viruses cling.

It is quite rare to encounter a naked virus particle floating in the air as the aerosol droplets help prevent capsid denaturation. When capsids start unfolding, the efficacy of the virus's virulence decreases dramatically.

I’m with you that masks stop major fluid flow which is what they are intended to do. I’m not insinuating the virus has wings. If people want to make a political or fashion statement with wearing a mask then have at it I’m talking actual efficacy which is minimal if anything.

Be careful who you call a sheep. "Sheep" manifest themselves in different ways. For example, those who refuse to wear masks because they were informed they are useless might be considered sheep by those who were informed otherwise.

Where was this? I’ve noticed a slight uptake in mask usage, which makes some sense given there is some increased virus spread. But nothing close to “many” or a majority of employees anywhere.

Personally I haven’t worn a mask since early ‘21 (after the really bad Delta wave things quieted down here for good, and the early reports were the Omicron variant was much milder… and at least based on hospital anecdotes that has remained true ever since). Seems to me that’s about when the vast majority shifted from masks to no masks, mid ‘21. Whenever I see a person wearing a mask now I assume they have a reason, such as living with someone who is immunocompromised. I’ve seen a few fast food and grocery workers wear them, as a said probably a few more recently, but still a relative few.
