Genuinely asking, not saying he was in the wrong or right or that police were in the wrong or right, but have seen enough cases of police provided narratives not actually being the whole truth that it merits asking the question. there is no requirement for guns to be “licensed” nor is there anything wrong with having a privately manufactured firearm for personal use. It is illegal to manufacture them for sale. Having a serial number on a gun does not prevent a crime from being committed with said gun. It can only assist in determining the last time a gun was transferred from a federal firearms licensee to a a private citizen. It does not help police with anything in the event the gun was stolen or otherwise illegally acquired. Possession of a privately manufactured, unserialized gun is not on its own evidence of anything nefarious
a registry is a non-starter for many people, including myself. It’s only a better solution for you because you don’t value your second amendment rights or the benefits you receive from others having second amendment rights. Fact is, guns are not cars and no government has had a history of taking away peoples’ cars and then committing atrocities. And again, this guy may not actually have been a prohibited person. Based on the outcome, he should have been, but the problem is we (rightfully so) tend to place a great amount of scrutiny on decisions to permanently remove a person’s constitutional rights and it is impossible to get all of the decisions right without having clairvoyance.

The current "valuing" of 2a by gun extremists is one where they studiously avoid the militia clause ("prefatory clause") in 2a and how gun registries and other gun laws such as against public carry have existed since the colonial era.

under the right set of conditions, sure. Funny how many complaining about Trump’s totalitarian policies are the same who would place absolute trust in the government as the sole entity who should be trusted to have guns. The problem with government is that no matter which party you vote for, you are never more than an election away from being at the mercy of the majority, and those in power do not always use that power responsibly or in the interest of the people, as so many on the left spent the trump administration pointing out. You can talk checks and balances all you want, but ultimately the second amendment is what gives those checks and balances teeth.
That's a bit of a sidestep. You suggested above that people who value 2a are against registries. But one can be for and value 2a and be for registries. Given how registries have existed since prior to the revolution and after, current jurisprudence has of late conveniently ignored history in order to arrive at some opinions. Fact is, there can be a national registry and there can be requirements for membership in an organized militia in order to have access to guns that is perfectly within the scope of 2a.
