Wading into a long-simmering legal dispute, the Appellate Division of the State Supreme Court in Albany said that the competitive, court-drawn districts put in place for last year’s midterms had only been a temporary fix. They ordered the state’s bipartisan redistricting commission to promptly restart a process that would effectively give the Democrat-dominated State Legislature final say over the contours of New York’s 26 House seats for the remainder of the decade. “We direct the I.R.C. to commence its duties forthwith,” Elizabeth A. Until all these terrible maps are unwound nationwide I don’t know why a state would attempt their own level of fairness. Seems like a catch 22.
A lot of people may wrongly assume that because New York is a blue state it was gerrymandered for Democrats. Not the case. A lot of history, most recently with Cuomo cutting a deal

I don’t see why it can’t be solved mathematically. Just start at a given point or points and apply an algorithm to draw districts with the minimal number of corners possible but each containing the same number of citizens.
