Okay, we live in a free society right? If it's easier to just do everything yourself, why are most people not doing that? Also, wouldn't "holding territory" be a necessary prerequisite to having a functioning society with trade? Trade isn't much good if some militant group can just waltz in and take everything.
I don’t think that at all. I think we have one or two idiot administrators who want to push an idiotic DEI agenda instead of letting students be who they are… It is embarrassing and the antithesis of a what a University is about. No doubt you support the idea of forcing people to conform. Assuming you agree with what they are required to conform to.
OK, let's assume that it's university policy, even though I haven't seen proof of that. How is it not letting students be who they are?
There are plenty of things I would like to do for myself but cant for a number of reasons, costs, increasing complexity as expertise has become commidified, time required to work to pay things, my own specializations meaning I cant become a "jack of all trades" to pay the bills etc. My grandfather built his own house, who could even do that anymore without navigating a web of regulations and codes?
Dont you just want conformity to what you think? Lets say the students are doing it voluntarily, you cool with it? Seems to me you are just looking for a boogeyman, lots of younger people don't have to be forced to do this!
We haven't even gotten to the fact that they aren't allowed to show up to lead tours in their bathing suits, forcing them to conform to norms about dress. What is this Communist Russia?
Because saying your pronouns is another one of those semantically charged things that is actually saying something else. It's like "Black Lives Matter." When people say "Black Lives Matter" it means a variety of things depending on the convenient meaning at the moment. Sometimes it's just that "Black lives matter," sometimes it's that "America is systemically racist," and sometimes it's endorsement of the organization called "Black Lives Matter." Saying your pronouns is not really an informative or correct way of communicating how people should address you, especially in the case of the Cicerones. It is implying that gender isn't binary, gender isn't dictated by the genitals you are born with, and any institution run on the premise that gender is binary based on your genitalia is flawed. So by mandating this, you are asking people to express a personal belief which they may or may not support. And that is what the actual purpose of that is. A lot of people don't know better. A lot of people don't think things through. A lot of people are just scared to say anything. And a lot of people just go through these quasi-religious rituals without even understanding why they're doing it. They're just patted on the head for it and told how great they are by a lot of influential people.
The contagion has simply set in, even assuming that they weren't told to do it. This didn't come from them originally. They were taught this and they bought it.
I was thinking that, too. Next thing you know, these poor kids are going to graduate and have to get jobs where they will be told they'll have to .... do things! Things that they wouldn't be doing if they didn't have those jobs. It's simply unnatural!
Either that or it's a mild fad that will come and go? Who is telling these kids are great they are for using pronouns?

Somehow you think that building your house, defending your house, farming food, finding food, AND innovating fancy products like iPhones yourself when you're not doing those things... is easier than just mastering one of those things and selling it to other people so you can buy products made by people who mastered their craft.
I will agree that it is ritualistic, but these people are ambassadors, that's kind of the job of being an ambassador. But I'm wondering who's patting them on the head? I dont get head pats when I do it.
