Once a great school, New College had fallen to 405th in the nation

Because the only things worth studying are the things the Collective has deemed are appropriate for college students to learn. Exposure to new ideas, thoughts and ways of looking at things have no business in a state university system. The Collective will keep minds from being contaminated, long live the Collective.

 

I know many successful graduates of New College, and I can say with certainty that your post above is complete bullshit.

My experience as well. I know 3 graduates. One is a statistician at Shands, one a VP at a NY investment bank and the 3rd is biology professor.

Among others. there is a former U.S. Attorney who is a friend of mine and a New College grad.

 

When are they going to change the name of that school?

 

There was a big push for it to happen in the wake of the George Floyd stuff in late 2020 but it was shot down. I think it will eventually happen but probably not for a while (after the boomer generation is gone) and until something like that happens again to act as a catalyst.

 

Why are liberal arts useless? (I have a bachelors from UF in LA and feel I was more well rounded and open minded because of it when I went to.law scbool.)
What course(s) of study would not be useless in your opinion? What's your degree(s) in?

I don't find humor in it either, but my brother pulled two tours in Nam (67-68), and one night years later, when he was drunk and crying, he told me how dark humor helped him and his men cope with the loss of a comrade in arms. Man is a complex species.

 

They have an extremely rigorous academic program. It offers the students both a lot of freedom and a lot of responsibility. I believe they all have to write and defend a thesis before they can graduate.

 

Pretty normal thing for a liberal arts school. The idea of a right-wing Oberlin is kinda funny, that's definitely the endpoint of this experiment.

 

I'm not him. But I have a political science degree from UF and it was pretty useless. I would have lost nothing by skipping the 30 credits of my major entirely.

I cringe whenever I see law school mentioned in conjunction with a liberal arts degree. Sure you have a the option to pay for another colossally expensive degree in order to make good use of the colosally expensive degree you already have! It's not as bad in Florida. But other places.

 

I have a liberal arts degree from Binghamton University, and a law degree and advanced tax degree from Florida. That liberal arts degree clearly has helped me greatly as a lawyer. It has allowed me to write well, think creatively, and, generally, expand my mind. There is no doubt in my mind that I would not have been as successful a lawyer as I have been without the liberal arts degree.

 

I have a poli sci degree from UF and I have used it for 41 years.

 

My son graduated with dual political science and economics degrees and considered himself neither an economist nor a political scientist. But he held a few politically related jobs before settling into his current occupation which he said was helped by a well-rounded education.

 

These conversations should be delimited as "other than a law degree, what can you do with a political science degree that can't be better accomplished through a different choice of major."


I'm a exceptionally good at writing, logic, critical thinking, word usage, reading comprehension, and pattern recognition.

I'm average to below average at organization, time management, short term memory tasks, multi-tasking, and hand eye coordination.

I know these things about myself because I have been tested at different points in my life. Including this year. It's the same now as it was when I was 10.

I'm good at what I'm good at and bad at what I'm bad at. I can improve my performance through strategy but my abilities just are what they are. And I think it's snake oil to assume a particular choice of major or university would have changed that.
