A new study indicates that 80% of coal power plants in the U.S. could be converted to nuclear power.

New report shows how 80% of America’s retired coal plants could soon become nuclear reactors: ‘An important opportunity’

A 2022 report by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) shows that 80% of the country’s retired or active coal plants are suitable to host advanced nuclear reactors.

The team identified 157 retired coal plant sites and 237 operating coal plant sites that can undergo a coal-to-nuclear transition. This could lead to many new employment opportunities, increasing economic benefits, and a significant improvement in nearby environmental conditions.

Nuclear energy is set to play a key role in meeting President Biden’s goals to achieve a clean grid by 2035 and reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. To pull that off, the DOE estimates that the country will need around 200 gigawatts of new nuclear power.

As of 2022, there were 92 nuclear power reactors in the U.S., most of which are on the East Coast or in the Midwest. And in 2021, nuclear power accounted for around 19% of energy produced in the U.S.

That would be great, it would really slow global warming by cutting co2 emissions to 0 from those facilities.

There's a new technology coming which sequesters CO2. It's interesting to see how technology continues to respond in all facets of our lives.

That has been overblown since Chernobyl, which was an awful design and had obsolete controls compared to today. The West has been decommissioning them since the 90s in favor of NG. Nuclear is really the way to go long term. Its bigger cousin, Fusion reactors will be our future anyway.

The future is apparently (almost) here. Virginia is getting the world's first nuclear fusion facility outside of Richmond. No word on whether Emmitt "Doc" Brown had anything to do with the design.

If all goes to plan, Virginia will be the site of the world’s first grid-scale nuclear fusion power plant, able to harness this futuristic clean power and generate electricity from it by the early 2030s, according to an announcement Tuesday by the startup Commonwealth Fusion Systems.

CFS, one of the largest and most-hyped nuclear fusion companies, will make a multibillion-dollar investment into building the facility near Richmond. When operational, the plant will be able to plug into the grid and produce 400 megawatts, enough to power around 150,000 homes, said its CEO Bob Mumgaard.

“This will mark the first time fusion power will be made available in the world at grid scale,” Mumgaard said. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin welcomed the announcement, calling it “an historic moment for Virginia and the world at large.”

The plant would represent a new stage in the quest to commercialize nuclear fusion, the process which powers the stars. But the path toward it is unlikely to be smooth, not least because the technology has not yet been proved viable.
