Not every family has time or means to go to the public library every time their kid needs a book. And you are a lazy parent because you can go down to the school and ask what your kid has checked out and discipline/teach them appropriately if it doesn't go with you agenda instead of hurting the kid who can't go pay for Amazon or the library on a whim that is 30 miles away. In what universe are San Francisco and Jackson ,Mississippi comparable? That's about as lame of a comparison as I've seen around here. For the record, Im not giving Jackson politicians a pass. They have historically failed. However some of you here seem to be giving the state a pass which is absurd since that's where the major purse strings are and it is the state capital after all.
To be fair, I don't know any details about Jackson or the comings and goings of people there over time. From a big picture perspective, though, it's notable that Mississippi didn't even repeal the ban on White people marrying outside of their race until 1987 - and that was apparently a very close vote. I think we can make some generalizations about views on race in Mississippi based on the laws they supported and the leaders they elected. I imagine it would be very difficult to actually prove the motivations of particular individuals and families if they weren't asked contemporaneously.
