It is pretty cool to think that our stomping grounds were once their stomping grounds Florida 'elephant graveyard' of gomphotheres found near Gainesville
Welcome to Montbrook The Division of Vertebrate Paleontology at the Florida Museum has at least one fossil collecting session per year that uses volunteer assistance. Our current large-scale excavation is at the Montbrook Site. The site is about a 45-minute drive south of Gainesville, near the town of Williston in Levy County. Based on the faunal assemblage and preservation, the site is believed to be 5 to 5.5 million years old (latest Miocene – earliest Pliocene, Hemphillian North American Land Mammal Age) and an ancient river system relatively close to a coast.
Very cool! Fossils are awesome. Earlier this week, I went down to the river during my lunch break and collected some 30 million year old agatized coral from the Oligcene/Miocene period. I have a fossilized (I think) bone that I found in the High Springs area that I would love to get identified. I emailed UF's Natural History Musuem for help but never heard back. I made a small donation and the re-sent the email noting that I made a donation but didn't hear back from that, either. Anyone paleontologists in the house?
always found it interesting that bison range extended down south of Gainesville and there is still a herd of wild bison on the prairie
Yeah, I think the fact it immediately popped into my head and you knew exactly what I was talking about shows how good that was.
