A girl recorded a teacher who she says used the "n-word" 6 times in class, she caught him twice by recording it on her phone. The teacher resigned, but the student was suspended for 3-days for "improper use of an electronic device ..."

    Way to go, Missouri... '

(This link doesn't have the video or specify it was the n-word used, but if you google around, you can find it.)

Missouri teacher who used racial slur resigns; student who taped him suspended (msn.com)

I saw the clip. He didn't direct the word at anyone but really seemed to go out of his way to say it multiple times with the hard r. Wonder if he would have as casually dropped the F bomb over and over in class? I feel like she should get some sort of whistleblower protection for her rule violation under the circumstances.

so if electronic devices were illegal in that classroom it is ok if she caught him using the word?2 wrongs do not make a right, either phones were prohibited or they were not, guess it depends on your political leanings as to how a rule is enforced.

As a maga friend recently said to me when I mentioned a similar story, "just the liberal media focusing on an isolated event, no racism in this country. Obama election proved that".:rolleyes:

I have no problem with kids using their phones to expose this kind of stuff. The teacher could deny saying it, but can't deny a video ...

The girl has a lawyer now demanding an apology from the school and for the suspension to be expunged ... hope it works out for her.

Conjecture on my part, seems the school district’s attorneys would draft a rule like this after considering other actions that would put the school district in a liability situation. They likely had to suspend the student, otherwise, making an exception would erode their protection. Maybe an attorney here could weigh in.

3 day suspension seems kinda steep for filming a video in class.

Not to get sidetracked, but this made me wonder how the "don't say gay" style bills will be enforced if there are strict rules against students using devices? Are they going to put cameras and microphones in all the classrooms or just rely upon witness statements? Maybe some schools already have cameras but not sure.

I think we have all gone hyper crazy about that stupid word, but at the same time at this point if a teacher doesn’t have enough sense not to say it, no matter what the circumstances, I don’t have any sympathy for him.

As to the suspension, I get and support having rules that forbid videotaping at school due to privacy concerns. However if there is inappropriate behavior going on, especially with the teacher, that kind of changes things. Probably not a hill the school district should die on this time.

Yeah, it should be taken into account that he had said it multiple times before she started recording … it’s not like she was making random tictoks and happened to catch it. According to WAPO, the teacher was playing the ole racist game of “if you can say it, why can’t I?” with some black students.

and there, imo, is the main problem with that word. if it is so offensive to african-americans they should never use it, yet they do all the time, but a non african-american, well, that ain't right.

You know maybe a one or two decades ago perhaps he gets away with it but now you just ought to know better - whether you think it is right or not.

I will say it’s kind of creepy that whatever your worst moments in life are these days, your dumbest decisions, are probably going to get caught on video. That’s both good and bad. Lord knows I’ve had lots of moments I’d rather not have on video.

Rules are rules. Zero tolerance suddenly sucks when it bites back, doesn't it? I hardly see the big deal, seeing as how the evil dragon was slain.

Maybe. I know you probably don’t think hearing the n-word is a big deal and don’t find it offensive, but some African Americans do.
