This is another bad decision in a list of bad decisions made because neither Congress, nor past President's have attempted to make meaningful policy regarding our borders. This is on the federal government, both Parties.
The USA has been making very "meaningful" policy for a very long time, before many of us were born. I would say our border policy has amounted to at least a decades long war effort on par with Afghanistan and other war efforts in terms of its cost, scope and boots on the ground commitments. People that say its a problem being ignored are not particularly serious, its mostly that its out of sight for most people. Also considering its unclear what people want exactly when it comes to policy outcomes, I can see why that might cause people to think that way too.
First off, the issues we are dealing with today are not nearly the same as the issues we had to deal with years before we were born, so that "meaningful" policy isn't fully applicable to today's issues. True border policy, that is what steps are taken to allow physical entrance into the country, has been talked about a lot with very little to show for it. That's a fact. Neither party has been willing to sit down and discuss valid policy that can be truly enforced. Talking about an issue and creating real-life solutions are two different things.
The issue is people coming across the border to find work in America, always has been. We want the labor (it is primarily agricultural), but we dont want them to stay for various reasons, which are mostly racist and/or owing to our ideas of our cultural superiority/purity. Perhaps the nations of origin are different now vs. majority Mexican in the 20th century. Its true that in more recent decades, its become more militarized, but we definitely used the military in years past, including incursions into their territory and military occupation. The other thing is that border policy hasnt been particularly partisan until very recently, so I think politics has played a role in making people think its something new or different from the past too. Its especially true in creating the false impression that the debate is between "open borders" vs. border security, which is an insult to our intelligence, but some people seem to eat it up.

i think almost everyone here is in favor of legal, by the law immigration. the problem is hundreds of thousands rushing the border do not seem to understand there is a process to go through.they want in now, refusing to follow said process,thus the tidal wave of people at the border and making it hard to stop everyone from getting away
