Update on the Texas shooting: Greg Abbott released a statement calling the victims "illegal immigrants." It turns out that he was wrong: Text: "I just spoke to the husband of one of the victims. He confirmed to me that his wife was a permanent resident of the US. He even sent me a picture of her ID confirming this." In fact, this victim had won asylum here in the U.S. and then became a legal permanent resident. Greg Abbott is despicable.
Are you implying that Republicans and Democrats are equally responsible for the lack of progress on gun control? Outrageous in the absence of any evidence to support this claim. You are oversimplifying a complex issue and ignoring the nuances of the positions and actions of the parties. You are also assuming both sides have the same level of responsibility for the issue, which is not the case. In my opinion, the Democrats want change (duh!) and the Republicans are holding fast. Earlier, you accused the "sides" of mocking each other, yet here you are mocking both sides. I could share ample evidence of Dems trying to improve the situation, from the PLCAA to trying to close the Charleston loophole. Unfortunately, I've wasted too much time with your rhetoric.
So on the mass shooting bingo card the "thoughts and prayers" square only applies to certain people and the " illegal immigrant" square to others? Don't forget the " mental health" square or the " but Chicago" squares either....
It wouldn't take every American family, just 40% or more of GOP Congress members. They shovel plenty of other BS legislation that doesn't have majority support, and they're the ultimate gate keepers preventing any sensible gun legislation. I'm certainly not condoning or suggesting killing Congress members' children or grandchildren. But until the ones blocking gun control laws are viscerally and personally motivated to change the status quo even when it means the ire of the NRA, nothing will change. And I just don't see anything else moving the needle until their children are the ones dying.
I don't know any way to stop shootings like this or the ones where some guy shot a kid for knocking on his door or a woman for pulling in his driveway. You'd basically have to disarm everyone, and that's not going to happen. Now, stopping people - especially ones with mental/emotional issues - from owning the weapons that make them capable of killing large numbers at a time ... that seems more doable.
The only time I feel like going out and shooting someone is after reading THFSG. Maybe banning message boards is the answer.
You've unintentionally identified one of the sources of the problem -- right-wingers getting triggered to the point that they decide to start killing people.
According to ABC News this scumbag was deported four times. He was also arrested for DUI while living here. So, here illegally multiple times, with an arrest thrown in for fun. There is no way this guy obtained the rifle legally, so how did he get it? The gun conversation is valid to some degree but in this case I think it's fair to mention our pathetic immigration/deportation policy before everyone jumps all over "Another shooting..." thread.
While our immigration policies aren't ideal, blaming it for an act violence committed by an undocumented immigrant is not productive. Some people commit violence regardless of their immigration status. I would rather our country and politicians focus on the root cause of gun violence and not use it to push other agendas, like immigration or alcohol. Elaborate why you think he obtained the rifle illegally. Does his deportation history or DUI offense stop him from legally buying a rifle in Texas? His purchase may even predate his offenses.
The tangential factors always just inadvertently call for more gun control. Well this shooter had mental illness. Cool, know what will help prevent that? Better gun control. Well this shooter was drunk and an illegal. Cool, know what would help prevent that? Better gun control. Well this shooter had prior criminal history. Cool, know what would help prevent that? You guessed it. Yet somehow, no better gun control.
Texas Fugitive Suspected of Massacring Neighbors Was Deported Five Times well inept joe and border czar, the spin is in your court
Illegal aliens is an American problem. It belongs to neither republicans nor democrats. That an illegal alien got a gun is the bigger problem where does the blame belong there.
Does it really matter the immigration status of the person who slain multiple people with an AR-15? It doesn't do me. And it's not like the previous administration did anything that actually stopped, or even slowed down the number of undocumented immigrants coming into this country. If fact, no administration has done anything effective since Reagan's amnesty. While we may never reach a state with no gun violence, we need to strive to do better. We may not be perfect, but we shouldn't let good be the enemy of perfect. If we can do better, we should at least try. Other countries have. Australia had a mass shooting, and since then, they have confiscated over 650,000 guns, and as a result, murder rates have fallen. Is it zero? No, but again, it's better than it was before.
i think the immigration status would have ment alot to the 5 dead, not here, they are not dead. after the 3rd time, he should have been locked up for good, just my opinion..
