6'3" 233lb junior. Seems like we could really use him. At that size, I'm guessing he's a safety? If yes, that's a bad position for the Gators to lose.
So, what's the deal with Powell? Did he get passed up on the depth chart? Did he want more NIL compensation? Or is it something entirely different? Either way, I wish him luck in the next chapter of his journey.
Looking at the positive here. This gives Jack Pyburn a great opportunity to step up and take the starting position. He was being projected as AP"s back up.
Correct. I pay little attention to the roster anymore and I don't follow recruiting. I found his page on the gator website and it does not list his position. Antwaun Powell-Ryland Jr. - Football - Florida Gators Now, would you mind helping a brother out by telling me his position? Thanks
Thanks - edge as in edge rusher? At 233? I thought maybe an outside linebacker, so I guess maybe I can see that in a 3-4 scheme. Or maybe his weight is listed a bit low.
Our edge and outside linebacker are more or less the same position. On the depth chart only two linebacker positions are listed. 230 something is fine for an outside backer, a little small for edge, but speed is more important than size for both positions. He played pretty well last year. I think Umanmielen has been penciled in as the starter, but he definitely would have been in the playing rotation.
Our edge rusher or "Jack" has fluctuated between 230 and 260 pounds the past several years but I'm not sure if that's going to continue. I noticed on the roster that there is no longer a distinction between the two DE positions. They're both listed at edge. None of the new freshman DEs looked like the hybrid LB/DE types of the past. Wondering if we're going to see fewer Ryland-Powell types and more big kids that can use their size to set the edge, more like a true four man DL. Still have to have that explosiveness from the weak-side spot. A shame to lose Ryland-Powell. He was pretty reliable if not disruptive.
I saw Umanmielen dog it sometimes last year.....never saw Ryland-Powell give less effort than capable.
This was only a loss if he was planning on sticking around two years. We're not winning anything next year, so might as well give the younger guys who can help us in two years get more reps.
