    I never understood the necessity of this law but it was the law. But now that it is a problem for RD, the law is likely to be repealed. Its good to be King.



    Florida Legislature poised to change law to aid a DeSantis presidential run

    TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida’s top Republican leaders say they are willing to change state law to smooth the way for Gov. Ron DeSantis to run for president in 2024.

    Both House Speaker Paul Renner (R-Palm Coast) and Senate President Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples), both of whom were sworn into their new posts on Tuesday, agreed it would be a “good idea” to make it clear that DeSantis would not have to resign if he wound up becoming the GOP nominee.

    Florida law requires anyone running for a new office to put in an irrevocable letter of resignation ahead of qualifying if the terms of the two offices overlap. The law was changed in 2008 to open the door for then-Gov. Charlie Crist to seek the vice presidency, but legislators reversed course four years ago and put back in a place a requirement that someone seeking federal office would have to resign ahead of the actual election.

    I don't know about irrevocable. But he should have to at least temporarily step down if he wants to run for President. Then again, he has been running for President for at least a year now. I do not look forward to the unconstitutional laws DeSantis and his cronies will pass in 2023 to bolster his chances in the right-wing lunatic primary.

    LOL, DeSantis Democratic opponent two weeks ago used this same thing in 2008. The worry over DeSantis is very real.

    Yes, laws in other states are different. Resign to run is the current Florida law. Tell Obama I said Hi back.

    Barack Obama was a US Senator; not the Florida Governor.

    Should the Florida governor be allowed to run a campaign for a different office while maintaining his/her/their position as governor?

    You’re right. Senators shouldn’t be required to show up to work. And all those Democrat sitting governors who ran for President before, well, that was then and this is now. LOL

    This legislature will do whatever DeS tells them to. Sad to say, at this point they fear his retribution like the pub party feared DT. Any leader who leads by fear should scare us all, especially those who so easily just ignore the laws of the land

    Well since you won’t answer the questions I proposed; I will. Yes, I think the governor of Florida should be allowed to run a campaign while still holding office. I wish these presidential campaigns weren’t beginning two years before the election, but that is a different issue.

    Well, the big point to me and the point that was indirectly made was that the FL legislators are willing to change a state law in order to benefit a single person. I think the chances are pretty good they change it back after this election cycle. Of course, if the Rs feel like they have the state gerrymandered and locked down forever they may not

    They also obviously wouldn’t do it for a dem Governor. I have no opinion on the law itself, but obviously many people run for higher office without resigning their current post. Some find it necessary to resign, some don’t. Is a Governor more obliged to resign than a house member or Senator? Maybe, executive is theoretically supposed to be more of a full time job. But let’s look past that. Why have a law if you’ll just easily change it for your own convenience? Just shows a lack of principles.

    You didn’t read it very closely. The sources have the influence to make it happen and they were named.

    You may have something if the change didn’t already have lots of precedent in prior Florida legislative history. And the fact that it was changed to benefit the guy who just ran as a Democrat two weeks ago speaks to the richness of Dem outrage on the matter. Truly if this is what you got on DeSantis, yikes.

    Oh, I believe it. I don’t have a strong opinion on the law but changing a state law to benefit 1 person rankles me. What do you think about that aspect?
