EDIT: Nevermind. Vote hasn't occurred yet. Ignore. Second EDIT: Vote happened. UF Faculty Senate overwhelmingly approves Sasse vote of no confidence - The Independent Florida Alligator
The question is whether it’s enough to derail it. I hope so, the more I think about it and read about it, it’s just a bad idea all around.
I thought we could do worse than Sasse (could also do better, but with the clown show in Tally - UF faculty better be careful what they ask for). However the process was definitely shit.
Hope the vote is anonymous or you know some professor's/department's state supported research could suddenly run into funding issues. That's the way the Gov works.
MIT just announced they have hired Dr. Sally Kornbluth as their next President. A cell biologist and provost at Duke University the last 8 years. A serious hire like Dr. Fuchs was. We are told on the UF website that there were 12 finalists and 9 were Presidents at prestigious research universities so all had better qualifications than Senator Sasse; yet we are told by the search committee that the decision was unanimous; there is a stench to this and it probably comes from the Governor's office.
They don't seem to amount to anything other than a message / shot across the bow. This one is interesting because it's not even for a standing prez, but a new hire. Will be interesting to see how Sasse's presidency goes. Lotta tension in hogtown
It's official. They approved the vote of no confidence. UF Faculty Senate overwhelmingly approves Sasse vote of no confidence - The Independent Florida Alligator
It doesn’t matter because only one side of the debate cares about the future of the university and higher education in the state. The GOP in Florida sees the higher education system in the state the way Putin sees the Ukraine. They would be happy to take it over and control it as a vassal state. But if they can’t do that, they will accept destroying the system so it’s of little practical use.
interestingly, this isn’t true. People like desantis shit talk higher Ed but then fund the shit out of it because it’s so important to their workforce development initiatives. Like I said, most of the non crazies know how important higher ed is. It’s the new breed of crazy that Republican demagoguery has unleashed that’s more problematic because they have actually come to believe the bs people like desantis spew about higher Ed being liberal propaganda camps.
Not a lot of info about why they voted this way, but lack of transparency in the search seems to be a theme.
