Just got the word that Ben Sasse (R-Nebraska) is the only finalist for the presidency. I can't imagine how the faculty will react - the vast majority will shiiit themselves having a Republican president. As a faculty member (at another university) and a conservative, I take joy in this.

But enough of the politics. Wonder what impact this could have, if any, on athletics? I read in his bio that his father was a HS coach. It will be interesting. I assume it's a done deal, as the University would be pretty embarrassed if their one finalist didn't get hired.

Just read a headline saying he was resigning from senate to be a college president. Had no idea it was UF.

Just a reminder, politics in a sports thread gets deleted or, if too much, the tread is sent to Too Hot.

A new President could mean bigger and better things for the sports programs though . . .

So you like him because he shares your political philosophies and what it appears to be 'sticking it to the libs'. You continue on by saying, "enough of the politics," even though that was the entire point of your first paragraph, by then emphasizing sports and athletics as the lone key criteria. (There may be others but you obviously didn't feel those warranted discussion)

Let me be clear, the criteria for the President of a university should always be education, and education only. While some partisan stooges and hacks might get all excited about the prospect of hiring someone whose qualifications are they share political interests and like sports , reasonable adults worry about more long term concerns, like ensuring UF remains a top tier academic institution and continues to have resources to support the development of the next generation of graduates.

Agree...do we really want to follow FSU into the Thrasher disaster by making a politician the head of the best school in the state? Leave that crap for the clowns out west...

One recent example of a national politician successfully (IMO) moving to flagship state university: Mitch Daniels. I see similarities: academic bent, centrist, wonk, writer and thinker, principles-over-party, pragmatist...thus, not a good fit for the performative-screaming of modern politics.

No particular opinion on the importance of a school president coming from an education background. Valid points both ways.

Hopefully this can get discussed without going to THFSG.

I don’t know anything go about this guy but I recall a thread at the search and people telling me the hire would be a politically driven one by DeSantis. I was naively hoping that wasn’t true but the guy has only been a university president or similar type position at Midland University. We had a Provost from Cornell previously.

He has a sterling academic career in terms of study (so he isn’t dumb) but I did hope for something completely different in the hire. I am disappointed.

Doesn't he have like 5 degrees ? Not for or against..but aren't some showing their dislike because of his political views ? Just like some are showing their approval of the hire because of his political stance?

Wow. Odd... Am I getting this right though, that the president of University of Alabama when Bryant was there was a very young (for the position) guy who had come over from politics?

Lol this will get moved to Too Hot in 3, 2, 1!!!!

I agree with you, but tell that to all the lib professors at UF who force students to listen to and are graded on their personal educational spin on so called education. I heard it myself so don’t clap back with a ridiculous take. It’s a fact. Clean it all up is what we can hope for. Stop indoctrinating, leave your personal/political issues at home and educate the students for success in life.

I'm not disagreeing with you. He may have all the qualifications in the world. The OP didn't speak of any of them. He spoke of a) his political leanings, and b) his appreciation for college athletics. My point is neither of these are qualifications for the leader of a top tier academic institution.

If those are the type of qualification the OP and those who share that philosophy value, then its probably better to go cheer for a school like University of Alabama. There's enough inbreds on that bandwagon that value those sort of qualities.

Not thrilled but he has some positives. Would prefer an academic but it could be a lot worse.

At any rate, congratulations to U.S. Senator Ben Sasse on his major promotion.
