How Americans Really Feel About Abortion: The Sometimes Surprising Poll Results As Supreme Court Overturns Roe V. Wade

Here's an abortion poll on how Americans feel about aboriton (prior to the SCOTUS decision. Some of the polls are misleading in how the questions are phrased. This one seems to account more for the nuanced position. IMO, a majority of Americans support the right to an abortion, with limitations. The problem with the way the issue has been discussed and/or litigated is the choices usually presented are unrestricted abortion laws or no abortion allowed. I think it's a mistake to attribute the idea that most who would rather have abortion than no abortion believe (as some here do) that the fetus is an appendage to be discarded at will. I also think it's a mistake to attribute the idea that those who believe there is, at some point, protections needed for the fetus, want to ban all abortions from day 1 of pregnancy. Unfortunately, the loudest partisan's steer our dialogue.

I have little doubt that a majority of Americans support restrictions on the right to an abortion at some point in a woman's pregnancy, probably late in the first trimester or early in the second trimester. What the overturning of Roe has done is to allow states to effectively prohibit virtually all abortions and a number of have already done or will be doing so in the very near future. Although not surprising I am somewhat disappointed that Democratic politicians have not taken a nuanced position probably because they fear hardcore supporters of abortion rights. When asked if they believe there should be restrictions on the right to abortion later in pregnancy almost every Democratic politician with very rare exceptions avoids answering the question and instead repeats the mantra "I support a woman's right to choose".

Agree. On the right we have uncompromising religious zealots who won’t compromise because they think God wants to ban abortion. On the left you have hard core activists who are completely unwilling to compromise because they don’t want to acknowledge the uncomfortable argument that a fetus is a human life and at some point should have overriding rights, and/or they think they can exploit the right wing zealotry for political gain. The result is a vast majority of the population would probably be content with a compromise but we are stuck where we are,,

I am sure you are being sarcastic but that is a really dumb argument.

It was a form of satire not to be taken literally, the point was the an egg although it has the potential to develop into a chicken is not a chicken.

Abortion is no different than gun control or voting rights. Any attempt for common sense reform is met with all out resistance from the other side.

Perspective: Post Roe v. Wade, women deserve better options

In 2019, there were more than 600,000 abortions in the United States. That’s 600,000 children who never drew their first breath, 600,000 mothers who felt that their “choices” were narrowed to just one, difficult option, and innumerable fathers, grandparents, neighbors and classmates whose lives were different because of the absence of that child.

The Supreme Court ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization limits the danger to children in the womb, but the justices cannot confer dignity, safety or hope by fiat. That’s the continued work required of the anti-abortion movement, work that offers chances for alliances with advocates for abortion rights. We don’t have to agree about the moral weight of abortion to acknowledge that America has neither a culture of life nor a culture of choice. We live in, as Pope Francis has termed it, a throwaway culture.

The majority of abortions in the United States are sought by women who have previously given birth to a baby. They don’t need to see an ultrasound to make the connection between pregnancy and parenthood. When mothers seeking abortion were interviewed in-depth, many said that they wanted to be able to give birth to the child they were carrying, but they felt it wouldn’t be fair to the children they were already struggling to care for. These women pass the test of the abortion-rights slogan “Every child a wanted child.” But they could tell that their children were unwanted by the rest of us. Death was the only “choice” that we, as a nation, made provision for.

But so is everything else with a moral component. Murder is about religion too. Without religion murder is just a different arrangement of protons, neutrons, and electrons than non-murder is. So is anything else you might claim is immoral. If there is no God, then it is just a different arrangement of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Morality is meaningless without God.

I think what is happening before our eyes is we've had this concept of "Society does not need a religion to flourish." And we are slowly seeing how that plays out on a societal level. It is kind of a "hold my beer" moment of human history, and let me show you how evil a society can really be. That is what the fruit of society without God and without religion is. Let us drink evil like water because we've said in our hearts "God does not exist." That is what is playing out. We are headed for the bottom of the moral gutter.

Nope, not at all. What I'm saying is worldview matters. A society that rejects the Christian worldview will see the results of that decision play out before their very eyes. We can't fall over selves fast enough to embrace and celebrate the very things paganistic demon-influenced societies in the past did. Child sacrifice is exhibit A to show you the power of demonic influence in our culture.
